Venice cycling holidays

Venice, famous for canals and gondolas, and the surrounding Veneto region, offer some of Italy’s most rewarding cycling experiences. From historic coastal towns and lush lagoons, to vine-covered hills and Renaissance cities, a cycling holiday in the Venice area reveals a different side of northern Italy. Discover its marvelous mix of natural beauty, elegance, artistic heritage, and fab food.

Why choose Venice for a cycling holiday?

The historic centre of Venice is best explored on foot or by boat, but the mainland and nearby islands are perfect for cycling. Leave the tourist bustle, and you’ll cycle into tranquil countryside, along rivers with breathtaking scenery, explore quaint villages and encounter authentic local life. The surrounding area of Venice has an incredible variety of landscapes. Cycle along the Adriatic coast, passing fishing villages and sandy beaches, or turn inland and cruise past Prosecco vineyards, medieval villas, and discover the wealth of Renaissance architecture in the cities of Treviso, Padua, and Vicenza. The immense artistic and cultural heritage of the Veneto is matched by a famously rich cuisine. From Palladian villas to ancient Roman roads, every pitstop will be remarkable. Refuel after a day in the saddle with Venetian classics like risotto al nero di seppia, cicchetti snacks and a sparkling glass of local Prosecco.

Weather & terrain in Venice

Venice and its surrounding area has a mild Mediterranean climate, with ideal cycling conditions in spring (April to June) and autumn (September to October). Summers can be hot but are manageable on coastal or shaded routes. Stretching from the Dolomites to the Adriatic, the terrain in the Veneto is mostly gently undulating. Although easy cycling, some unpaved tracks will be better suited to heavier bikes; but road-racers can take alternative routes. It is especially flat around the Po River delta and lagoon areas, making the region suitable for all cycling abilities. There are numerous possibilities for relaxed and rewarding days of cycling, such as the Treviso-Ostiglia trail. This 50km converted railtrack passess meadows and woods, with plenty of tempting stops along the way. Or, from Venice, access the cycle path to Pellestrina Island, where the adventurous cyclist can take an open path around the lagoon.
