Somewhere beyond the horizon, Venice and the sea are waiting. But the journey there is just as rewarding as the destination. This 8-day cycling holiday connects two of northern Italy's most iconic cities, tracing a route through the spectacular landscapes of South Tyrol, the shores of Lake Garda, and the cities of Verona and Padua, before arriving at the world-famous lagoon city.
From Bolzano, the route follows beautiful cycle paths along the River Adige through orchards and vineyards, heading south towards Trento. A boat crossing on Lake Garda brings a wonderful moment of contrast before the riding continues through the hills of the Berici region to Vicenza. The university city of Padua and its magnificent Basilica of Saint Anthony give way finally to the Venetian lagoon.
Distances range from 37 to 70 miles per day, with the terrain mostly flat to gently rolling — though days four and five bring more character through the hills. The route is almost entirely on tarmac, with well-developed cycle paths along the Adige and into the Venetian plain. Two categories of accommodation are available: Cat A offers a blend of 3-star and 4-star hotels throughout, while Cat B provides 3-star comfort at excellent value.

Bolzano is a charming town in the heart of South Tyrol, nestled between the Alps and vineyards. Explore the historic arcades, lively squares, and the mix of Italian and Austrian character that defines this unique city. A particular highlight is the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology, home to Ötzi the Iceman, one of the world's oldest and best-preserved natural human mummies.

You pedal along beautiful cycle paths beside the River Adige, partly through orchards that stretch as far as the eye can see, and partly through the vineyards that produce some of South Tyrol's finest wines. At Salorno, the German-speaking Tyrol gives way to Trentino, and the landscape takes on a distinctly Italian feel as you continue south to the historic city of Trento, with its magnificent piazzas and Renaissance cathedral.

You continue along the Adige to Rovereto, then head westwards towards Lake Garda. After a short ascent, a spectacular descent brings you down to Torbole and on to Riva del Garda, one of the lake's most attractive resort towns. From here a wonderful boat trip takes you down the full length of Italy's largest lake to Garda or Bardolino, with the mountains reflecting in the turquoise water all around you.

You leave the shores of Lake Garda, heading back towards the Adige Valley through olive groves and Bardolino vineyards. Rejoining the cycle path, you follow the river south to Verona, the city of Romeo and Juliet. The famous Arena, Juliet's balcony, and the impressive ancient city walls are all waiting to be explored. The evening in Verona, with its outdoor restaurants and lively piazzas, is one of the highlights of the tour.

Today's route is initially flat before climbing through the Monti Berici hills to reach Vicenza. If the distance feels long, the first section can be covered by train to San Bonifacio. In Vicenza, the spirit of Palladio, the great Renaissance architect, is everywhere — from the magnificent Basilica to the Teatro Olimpico, the world's oldest surviving indoor theatre. The city's elegant streets invite leisurely exploration.

Leaving Vicenza, you pass numerous Venetian villas, including the famous Villa Rotonda. The route follows the River Bacchiglione through the renowned spa town of Abano Terme before arriving in Padua. This university city, one of the oldest in Europe, impresses with its magnificent palaces, historic squares, and the remarkable Basilica of Saint Anthony, one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in the world.

Your final day of cycling is a gentle, largely flat ride across the Venetian plain towards the sea. The landscape opens up into meadows and fields as Venice draws ever closer. Arriving on the mainland, an excellent bus service takes you across the causeway into the city of lagoons. Venice is magical at any hour, but the evening light on the canals is something truly special — the perfect reward at the end of your journey.

After breakfast, your tour comes to an end. Venice offers countless reasons to extend your stay, from the galleries of the Accademia to the islands of Murano and Burano. Alternatively, the train back to Bolzano takes around three hours, making a same-day return connection straightforward.

Getting to Bolzano
By plane: The most convenient airports are Innsbruck (INN) in Austria, around 1 hour from Bolzano by train, and Verona (VRN), around 1.5 hours south. Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is around 3 hours by train but offers more flight options from the UK. Bolzano itself has a small airport, though scheduled services are limited.
By train: Bolzano is well connected by rail. From the UK, take the Eurostar to Paris, then overnight train or high-speed connection via Milan to Bolzano. Direct Trenitalia services run from Verona to Bolzano in around 1.5 hours. From Munich, the journey takes around 3 hours via Innsbruck.
Getting home from Venice
By plane: Venice Marco Polo (VCE) is around 15 km from Mestre and has regular flights to UK airports. The Alilaguna boat service connects the airport to the city in around 75 minutes, or the ATVO bus takes around 20 minutes to Piazzale Roma.
Return transfer: Eurobike offers a return transfer from Venice/Mestre to Bolzano every Friday, Saturday and Sunday morning. Cost is £113 per person, with a £51 supplement if you are bringing your own bike. Advance booking is essential.
