Vineyards looking over the Douro Valley

Douro Valley cycling tours & bike holidays

Some of the world’s most panoramic cycling can be found in Portugal’s Douro Valley. A Unesco World Heritage Site that includes one of the oldest wine-producing regions. Here, you get to cycle through lush valleys and terraced vineyards and discover Douro’s rich cultural heritage. The Douro is renowned for its iconic river, delightful villages and, of course, those world-class wines. Whether you want to tackle some spectacular hill-climbs, or meander through historic towns and vineyards, this region guarantees fabulous cycling.

Why choose Douro Valley for a cycling holiday?

It may be a secret, but the Douro Valley is a cyclist’s paradise. The compact, varied landscape guarantees stunning views for all cyclists, whether you’re committed to hill-climbs, wish to meander through the terraced vineyards, or simply happy to pedal along the riverbanks and enjoy a pit-stop in an idyllic historic town.

Whether you have cycled full-pelt all day, or stopped off along the way to learn about the unique history of the Douro or visit some of its ancient wineries, you’ll be ready to recuperate with a traditional, hearty goat stew or, perhaps some cod bacalhao, all paired with a glass of that renowned wine.

Weather & terrain in Douro Valley

The Douro Valley mirrors the Mediterranean climate with hot summers and mild winters. An ideal time for cycling here is the spring months (April to June), or, in autumn (September to October) when cooler temperatures combined with the vibrant colours of the valley’s vineyards promise a spectacular bike ride. The terrain is varied, with some challenging climbs through terraced vineyards, encountered on major cycle routes such as the Douro Gran Fondo. Alternatively there are routes along the Douro River Cycle Path for those looking for a more relaxed experience.

Inspiration for your Douro Valley adventure

Beyond cycling, the Douro Valley offers a fabulous holiday experience. Take a river cruise along the Douro River, or discover the historic town of Lamego with its Moorish castle and grand boulevard, or simply visit a wine estate. This is the destination for an adventure that takes your cycling holiday to another level; stunning natural beauty, a rich cultural heritage and fine wines. Who can resist!
