Why choose Lisbon for a cycling holiday?

Lisbon offers a diverse range of routes. Whilst renowned for its steep hills and cobbled street roads, the city also offers scenic waterfront cycling and enjoyable paths out of town. Ride through the narrow alleyways of Alfama or across the grand squares of Baixa, and you’ll pass tile-covered buildings, historic landmarks, and vibrant neighbourhoods. Where the River Tagus meets the Atlantic, you can follow the promenade all the way to Belém. There you will find landmarks such as the Belém Tower, Jerónimos Monastery, and the Discoveries Monument. Continue further to Cascais, a vibrant seaside town known for its beaches, marina, and relaxed atmosphere. Lisbon’s food scene adds another layer to the experience. Grab a pastéis de nata, sample local seafood, or relax at one of the riverside cafés with a glass of wine from Setúbal or Alentejo. There are plenty of stops worth making, on and off the saddle.

Weather & terrain in Lisbon

Lisbon’s Mediterranean climate makes it a great year-round cycling destination with mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers. March to May and September to November offer the most comfortable conditions for cycling with sunny days, little rain, and pleasant temperatures around 18–25°C. Summers can get hot, especially in July and August, so early morning rides are best during those months.

The city’s terrain is famously hilly and is built across seven steep slopes. Some climbs can be challenging, especially in older neighbourhoods like Alfama or Bairro Alto. However, the riverside areas and dedicated cycle paths along the Tagus offer flatter, easier rides. E-bikes are a popular option for tackling steeper sections while still enjoying the city’s sights. Whether you're looking for a leisurely waterfront route or a hillier adventure, Lisbon has a variety of terrain to suit different cycling levels.
