Douro Valley, Portugal
This cycling holiday takes you deep into the Douro Valley, one of Portugal’s most scenic and culturally rich regions. Starting in the historic town of Bragança, you will ride through rolling hills, medieval castles and traditional villages where life moves at a slower pace. Almond and olive groves line your path, while panoramic roads reveal sweeping views over rivers and vineyards.
As you approach the Douro itself, the landscape changes into a patchwork of famous terraced vineyards, where port wine has been produced for centuries. Each day combines rewarding cycling with opportunities to enjoy regional food, fine wine and authentic hospitality in small towns and lively squares.
Your journey ends in style with a boat trip down the Douro to Porto. From the water you will see vineyard terraces, charming riverside hamlets and dramatic gorges before the city unfolds with its iconic bridges and colourful old town. This is a cycling holiday full of contrasts, combining nature, history, culture and cuisine in equal measure.
For fit cyclists who enjoy steep climbs and full days of riding. Demanding routes with big rewards and epic views.
Your adventure begins in Bragança, a town rich in history and character. The medieval castle rises above the old town, its towers and walls offering a glimpse into the region’s past as a fortified stronghold. A stroll through the cobbled streets reveals beautiful squares where cafés spill out under the shade of trees, perfect for an early taste of Portuguese hospitality. A small stream winds its way through the town, adding to the charm.
You might like to spend the afternoon exploring the castle grounds, visiting the Domus Municipalis, or simply soaking up the atmosphere of the town. With its blend of medieval heritage and relaxed rhythm, Bragança sets the tone for the week ahead. Overnight at Pousada de Bragança.
As you leave Bragança, the castle slowly disappears behind you and the rolling hills take over the horizon. The ride is lined with almond and olive groves, their silver leaves shimmering in the sun. This is a quieter part of Portugal, where life moves at a slower pace. You’ll pass through villages of stone houses, each with its own character, before reaching the open countryside where storks can often be seen near Valdrez.
The tranquillity of the route is broken only by the occasional climb. The final ascent of the day is followed by a gentle cycle path that carries you easily into Macedo de Cavaleiros. The town is inviting and unspoilt, with a relaxed atmosphere and welcoming squares where you can unwind after your first full day of cycling. Overnight at BHB Boutique House.
This morning begins with a cycle path that gently guides you out of town and into the countryside. Before long, the scenery opens into wide views of cork oaks, olive groves and the rugged terrain that defines this region. Along the way, you’ll pass through small villages adorned with roses, where a stop for a sweet chestnut cake makes for the perfect local treat.
The route becomes more varied as the terrain grows rockier, with undulating hills and glimpses of valleys below. Each turn of the road brings a fresh panorama, rewarding your effort with sweeping views. By the afternoon you reach Vila Flor, a picturesque town with narrow streets and shaded squares where locals gather. Its historic centre and peaceful pace provide the ideal setting for a relaxed evening. Overnight at Quinta da Pereira.
Leaving Vila Flor, you enjoy a rewarding descent that winds through terraced vineyards and dry stone walls, a landscape shaped by centuries of farming. The ride brings you down to the River Sabor, where the route follows the water towards its meeting point with the Douro. The riverside setting is perfect for a pause, and in summer you might enjoy a refreshing swim at a local river beach.
From here, the scenery shifts once more. You pass through Torre de Moncorvo, known for its iron ore history and charming town centre, before continuing on a panoramic road towards Pocinho. The final stretch is particularly memorable, with spectacular views of the terraced vineyards that define the Douro Valley. Your destination is Vila Nova de Foz Côa, an authentic town that makes for a comfortable and atmospheric overnight stay at A Flor da Rosa.
Today’s ride begins with a steady climb along a panoramic road. Endless rows of almond and olive trees keep you company as the landscape opens into dramatic views. The climbs may be challenging, but the reward comes with each crest, where the Douro Valley spreads out below in all its grandeur. This is wine country at its finest, the terraced slopes stretching down towards the river in perfect symmetry.
After the climbs, a thrilling descent leads you directly into Pinhão. Nestled on the banks of the Douro, this charming village is at the very heart of the wine region. Its riverside promenade, historic railway station with azulejo tiles, and relaxed atmosphere make it a highlight of the trip. Here you can celebrate the day’s ride with a glass of the local port. Overnight at LBV House Hotel.
The day begins with cycling through sunlit vineyards that stretch across the hillsides. The route leads inland, giving you a fresh perspective on the region before a long and exhilarating descent returns you to the banks of the Douro. Once again, you climb above the river, cycling along steep slopes where port wine vineyards dominate the view. The interplay of height and perspective makes today’s ride especially dramatic.
Your destination is Peso da Régua, the beating heart of the Douro wine trade. Here, warehouses, tasting rooms, and lively restaurants celebrate the valley’s most famous export. The town has a relaxed riverside feel, and with plenty of excellent dining options, it is the perfect place to end the day. Overnight at Vila Galé Collection Douro.
Instead of cycling, today you experience the Douro from a completely different perspective. At 10 a.m. your boat departs Peso da Régua, gliding downriver towards Porto. From the deck you’ll see the terraced vineyards rising steeply on either side, dotted with small villages, cherry orchards and dense forests.
The journey is as much about variety as it is about scenery. Narrow rock passages give way to wide stretches of river, and you will pass through two impressive locks, each a feat of engineering. The pace of the boat allows time to relax, reflect, and enjoy the landscape at leisure. By late afternoon, the skyline of Porto comes into view, with its bridges, church towers and colourful houses cascading down to the river. Overnight at Vila Galé Porto Ribeira.
After breakfast your holiday comes to an end. Depending on your plans, you may wish to extend your stay in Porto to explore its UNESCO-listed old town, sample its famous wines, and enjoy its lively atmosphere. For those travelling home, it is time to take with you memories of a week filled with contrasts, from medieval castles and quiet villages to sun-drenched vineyards and the unique beauty of the Douro.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Porto Airport (OPO) and returning from Porto Airport (OPO),.
