Self-guided cycling holiday
Tyrol, Austria
This relaxed cycling holiday takes you along the Drau River on one of Austria’s most scenic and sun-kissed routes. From the alpine setting of Lienz to the warm, tranquil shores of Lake Klopein, you’ll pass ancient castles, quiet farming villages, wild river landscapes and historic towns rich with character. The route follows a well-maintained and mostly flat cycle path, making it ideal for riders who want to explore at a comfortable pace, so there’s plenty of time to stop at local wine taverns, enjoy Carinthian and Tyrolean specialities, or simply soak up the scenery.
Ideal for a relaxed pace with short distances and gentle terrain—perfect for beginners, families, or laid-back sightseeing.
Select the tour you are interested in to view the itinerary.
Arrive in the lively town of Lienz, nestled between the Drau River and the towering Lienz Dolomites. With over 2,000 hours of sunshine a year, it’s one of Austria’s brightest and most welcoming spots.
Take a scenic train ride to San Candido in Italy, then cycle back to Lienz along the young, fast-flowing Drau. With dramatic rock formations, castles perched above the valley and peaceful chapels tucked into the landscape, it’s a day of vivid contrasts and stunning views.
Ride alongside the glacier-fed Drau, nicknamed “glacier milk” for its silvery hue. Follow ancient Roman routes through the Upper Drau Valley past villages, ruins and wayside crosses. Don’t miss Oberdrauburg and Dellach, your first taste of Carinthian charm.
Cycle through rolling farmland, forests and hamlets dotted with flower-covered farmhouses. Stop at a traditional Buschenschenke (wine tavern) for rustic, local fare. In Spittal, explore Renaissance-era Schloss Porcia—one of Austria’s finest palaces.
Follow the Drau through the cultural heartland of Upper Carinthia. The route passes woodland and wetlands before reaching Villach, a city known for its Italian flair, café culture, and lively atmosphere.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Ljubljana and returning from Ljubljana.
