Self-guided cycling holiday
Tyrol, Austria • Vienna, Austria
This shorter version of the Danube Cycle Path tour offers a condensed yet enriching journey through one of Austria’s most scenic and culturally significant regions. Starting in the riverside town of Grein and ending in Vienna, this ride takes in the dramatic river valley of the Strudengau, the vineyard-draped hills of the Wachau, and the historic towns that line this storied stretch of the Danube. Along the way, sample regional wines, marvel at grand monasteries, and immerse yourself in the beauty of rural Austria - before arriving in the imperial capital.
Ideal for those seeking a relaxed, scenic ride packed with highlights over a long weekend or short break.

Select the tour you are interested in to view the itinerary.
Arrive in the charming town of Grein on the Danube, known for its baroque town centre and historic theatre. Depending on your arrival time, take a walk along the river or visit Greinburg Castle before settling in for the night.
Cycle through the scenic Strudengau and Nibelungengau regions, once feared by sailors and now a peaceful stretch of river valley. Pass through villages like Ybbs and Marbach before reaching the gateway to the Wachau Valley.
Take time to visit the Benedictine Abbey of Melk before continuing into the Wachau—a region of vineyards, apricot orchards, and riverside castles. Cycle through wine villages like Spitz and Dürnstein, and enjoy a wine tasting along the way. End the day in Krems, Traismauer, or Tulln.
Distance travelled = 25-47 miles
Your final ride leads you toward Austria’s capital. Depending on your starting point and route, you may travel part of the way by train. Arrive in Vienna and toast your journey with a melange coffee and a slice of Sachertorte. Take in St. Stephen’s Cathedral, the Ringstrasse, or enjoy a classic Fiaker carriage ride.
Distance travelled = 28-47 miles.
Stay on to explore more of Vienna or continue your travels elsewhere.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Vienna and returning from Vienna.
