Embark on a memorable journey along Italy’s very first dedicated bike path: the Adige River Cycle Route. Beginning at the Austrian border, this gentle ride takes you through the heart of South Tyrol, where Italian and Austrian cultures blend seamlessly. Pedal past alpine lakes, medieval castles, and apple orchards — all set against the stunning backdrop of the Dolomite Mountains. With a well-developed, mostly flat cycling network, this tour is ideal for beginner and leisure cyclists looking for a scenic and culturally rich holiday.
Trip Highlights
What to Expect
This five-day tour features easy daily rides along mostly flat terrain, with a few gentle climbs. The South Tyrolean cycle network is highly developed, with well-signposted, paved paths. While most of the riding is traffic-free, some caution is needed when entering or exiting towns. Train options are available daily to shorten the rides if desired.
Arrive in the bilingual city of Bolzano, where Italian and German cultures meet at the gateway to the Dolomites. Wander the charming old town, explore Gothic and Baroque architecture, or visit the renowned Archaeological Museum to see Ötzi the Iceman.
Begin your day with a scenic transfer to the Reschen Pass (1,500 m), where your cycling adventure begins. Ride along Lake Resia and stop to admire its famous submerged bell tower. Continue downhill through the Vinschgau Valley, past Glorenza (Italy’s smallest walled town) and the 12th-century Monte Maria Abbey, before reaching Silandro.
Optional: Shorten via train from Malles or Lasa to Silandro
Cycle through a patchwork of apple orchards and charming Tyrolean villages, including Laces, home to a beautiful Gothic church. Arrive in the elegant spa town of Merano, known for its lush promenades and thermal baths — the perfect way to unwind.
Optional: Shorten via train from Laces, Ciardes, Naturns, Plaus, or Rabland
Follow riverside bike paths and orchard-lined backroads to Bolzano. Along the way, stop in Lana to visit the Apple Museum and admire the ornate Gothic altar of the Parish Church of St. Mary. Return to Bolzano for a final evening in this cultural crossroads.
Optional: Shorten via train from Postal, Terlan-Andrian, or Ponte d’Adige /Sigmundskron
Enjoy one final stroll through Bolzano before departure — or extend your stay to explore more of South Tyrol.
We recommend flying to Verona and returning from Verona.
