Ringed on three sides by lakes and surrounded by the flat farmland of the Lombardy plain, Mantua (Mantova) is one of Italy's most beautiful and most cyclable Renaissance cities. The celebrated Mincio cycle path links it to Lake Garda along a gentle, almost entirely car-free route, making the city a perfect, peaceful finish to a ride through northern Italy.
Mantua is a jewel of Renaissance Italy, a UNESCO World Heritage city of palaces, piazzas and domes, yet it remains refreshingly uncrowded compared with its better-known neighbours.
For cyclists it is a gift: reached along the flat, scenic Mincio path from Lake Garda and ringed by its own lakes and bike-friendly countryside, it offers effortless riding in beautiful surroundings.
The food alone is worth the journey — pumpkin-filled tortelli, slow-cooked meats and crumbly sbrisolona cake, best enjoyed at a table in the shadow of the Palazzo Ducale after a day's ride.
Mantua lies on the flat Po plain and has a temperate continental climate — warm, sometimes humid summers and mild spring and autumn shoulder seasons that are perfect for cycling. Morning mist drifting over the lakes is a characteristic and atmospheric feature of the area.
The terrain could hardly be easier: the Mincio cycle path and the surrounding country lanes are flat and well maintained, with no climbs to speak of, so riders of any level can enjoy long, relaxed days in the saddle.

“The Mantua–Peschiera del Garda cycle route along the River Mincio is one of Italy's best-loved flat bike paths — around 40 km of well-surfaced, largely traffic-free riding between Lake Garda and the city's own three lakes.”
LukeCo-founderLate spring and early autumn are ideal. The surrounding plain can be hot and humid in July and August, so ride early and take plenty of water.
Very easy — the Mincio path and the roads around Mantua are flat and largely traffic-free, ideal for leisurely, family-friendly riding.
Mantua has characterful hotels within its historic centre and agriturismi in the surrounding countryside, many geared to cyclists with secure storage and hearty breakfasts.
