The Rhine cycle path between Strasbourg and Mainz passes through three magnificent European wine regions — Alsace, Baden, and the Palatinate. Sharing a river, a mild climate, and a passion for viticulture, these regions also share an astonishing depth of history: Roman emperors, medieval traders, and Renaissance merchants have all left their marks on the towns and cities along this route.
From the baroque splendour of Strasbourg, you follow the Rhine north through the ancient imperial city of Speyer, the university town of Heidelberg, and the cathedral city of Worms before arriving in Mainz. The cycling is predominantly flat on well-built cycle paths, making this one of Eurobike’s most accessible routes — ideal for first-time touring cyclists or those looking for relaxed, scenery-rich days in the saddle.
Daily stages range from 13 to 40 miles, mostly flat on asphalted cycle paths and quiet side roads. Two categories of accommodation are available: Cat A in 3-star and 4-star hotels, and Cat B in 3-star hotels and inns. Two short ferry crossings are part of the route (costs approx. £2.50 per person including bike, payable locally).

Strasbourg is the charming capital of Alsace near the German border. Explore the historic city with its half-timbered houses, picturesque canals of the Petite France quarter, and the magnificent Gothic cathedral with its famous astronomical clock. As the seat of the European Parliament, Strasbourg is a city where French and German cultures meet in fascinating harmony.

A beautifully built cycle path takes you to the Rhine’s bank. Cycling comfortably through the gentle Rhine valley, you take a ferry at Drusenheim across to the German side and continue through charming meadow landscapes to Rastatt, with its fine baroque old town and Versailles-inspired palace.

Today you cycle idyllically along old Rhine arms through what feels like untouched nature, then head through the Hördter Rheinauen — the largest nature protection area in the Palatinate — to the former fortress city of Germersheim. The newly formed Rhine riverbank and the unhurried town centre make for a pleasant evening.

The Rhine brings you to the imperial city of Speyer, whose magnificent Romanesque cathedral is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The famous Schwetzingen Palace and its gardens are a further highlight before the day ends in Heidelberg — Germany’s oldest university town, with its romantic ruined castle overlooking the Neckar valley.

You cycle along the Neckar to Ladenburg, one of Germany’s best-preserved Roman towns, before continuing through the Rhine valley to Worms. This ancient imperial city’s 12th-century Romanesque cathedral, the Martin Luther Monument, and the oldest Jewish cemetery in Europe make it one of the most historically rich stops on the route.

A relaxed day of cycling along the Rhine through farmland and orchards, with the first vines appearing as you approach the wine village of Nierstein — one of the most celebrated on the Rhine. The evening is made for sitting outside with a glass of Riesling and watching the river traffic flow past.

A short final stage giving you the whole afternoon free in Mainz. The vineyard path threads through steep wine-growing slopes before dropping back to the Rhine bank for the final kilometres into the city. Mainz’s Romanesque cathedral, the Gutenberg Museum, and the lively Altstadt are all waiting to be explored.

After breakfast your tour comes to an end. Frankfurt Airport is just 30 minutes from Mainz by direct train — one of the most convenient departure points of any Eurobike tour.

Getting to Strasbourg
By plane: Strasbourg Airport (SXB) has limited UK connections but is just 15 minutes from the city centre by shuttle. More practical for most UK travellers is flying to Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) and taking the TGV to Strasbourg — around 2 hours 20 minutes and covered by Eurostar through-ticket. Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is around 1 hour 50 minutes by train, and Basel-Mulhouse-Freiburg (EAP) is around 1 hour 30 minutes.
By train: Take the Eurostar from London St Pancras direct to Paris Gare du Nord, then a TGV Alsace-Lorraine direct to Strasbourg. Total journey time from London is around 4.5 to 5 hours — one of the most convenient train journeys available for a European cycling holiday.
Getting home from Mainz
By plane: Frankfurt Airport (FRA) is around 30 minutes from Mainz by direct train, with Intercity Express services running frequently. Frankfurt is a major international hub with direct flights to all UK airports.
Return transfer: Eurobike offers a return transfer from Mainz to Strasbourg every Saturday morning, costing £109 per person (plus £51 bike supplement). Advance booking is required.
