This is Alsace with a different focus.
While wine defines much of the region further south, northern Alsace has its own long standing brewing tradition. This tour follows that story by bike, linking historic towns, hop fields and independent breweries across the Rhine plain and into the foothills of the Vosges.
Starting and finishing in Strasbourg, the route forms a relaxed loop through Haguenau and Saverne. Along the way, you ride through the Haguenau forest, one of the largest in France, follow quiet canal paths and pass fields of hops often referred to locally as green gold.
There is a strong sense of history here, but it feels lived in rather than preserved. Brewery visits are part of the rhythm of the trip, from smaller local producers to the long established Villa Meteor, where the brewing process is still rooted in tradition.
It’s an easy going route with a clear theme, ideal for those who enjoy cycling with a bit of character and a different angle on a region.
Tour Highlights
• Discover Alsace’s brewing heritage and local breweries
• Visit Villa Meteor, France’s oldest independent family brewery
• Ride through the Haguenau forest and Northern Vosges landscapes
• Cycle along the Rhine and peaceful canal paths
• Historic towns including Strasbourg, Haguenau and Saverne
• Cross cultural influences between France and Germany
Arrive in Strasbourg and settle into your hotel. The city has a long brewing history, and it’s easy to find it in the bars and traditional winstubs tucked into the old town. It’s worth taking an evening walk through the historic centre before the ride begins.
Leave Strasbourg on well developed cycle paths heading towards the Rhine. The landscape opens out into the flat river plain, with wide skies and quiet roads. As you approach Haguenau, signs of the region’s brewing heritage begin to appear, including the historic Hop Hall, once used to dry and store hops.
Today’s ride has a slightly different feel. The route becomes more rural as you move towards the Vosges foothills, with gentle climbs and more varied scenery. Along the way, you can stop at a local brewery in Uberach for a closer look at small scale production.
Saverne marks the end of the day, with its château, canal and relaxed atmosphere at the edge of the mountains.
Follow the Marne Rhine canal back towards Strasbourg on a flat and easy cycle path. This is a steady, unhurried ride, with time to stop along the way. A highlight is Villa Meteor in Hochfelden, where you can visit the brewery and taste beers that reflect generations of brewing tradition.
As you return to Strasbourg, the European district offers a contrast to the historic centre where your journey began.
Depart after breakfast or extend your stay in Strasbourg.
We recommend flying to Baden-Baden and returning from Baden-Baden.
