Germany's most romantic stretch of river, where medieval castles perch above terraced vineyards and the Riesling poured in every village tavern has been made from grapes grown on these slopes for centuries.
The Middle Rhine is one of Europe's great cycling landscapes. The river cuts through a dramatic gorge flanked by vine-terraced slopes, with a medieval castle appearing on the skyline every few kilometres. The cycling is almost entirely flat along the bank, with the option to climb into the vineyards for bigger views and quieter roads. Lorelei, Bacharach, Rüdesheim — these are the kind of places where every inn has its own wine and every cellar door is open.
South of the gorge, the Rhineland-Palatinate (Pfalz) opens up into broader, sunnier wine country centred on Neustadt an der Weinstrasse — Germany's wine capital and the heart of our Rhine tour. The Mittelhaardt slopes here produce some of Germany's most acclaimed Rieslings, from the villages of Deidesheim, Wachenheim and Forst, where the cycling is flat, the villages are beautiful and the hospitality is very hard to leave.
The Rhine Valley has a warm continental climate, sheltered from Atlantic rain by the Vosges and Haardt mountains. The cycling season runs from April to October, with warm summers and a particularly pleasant harvest season in September. Terrain along the river is largely flat; the vineyard slopes and hills above the gorge are steeper but well-signed.

“The Middle Rhine Valley between Bingen and Koblenz contains 40 hilltop castles and towers — more than any other stretch of river in the world.”
LukeCo-founderThe EuroVelo 15 Rhine Cycle Route runs the full length of the river and is excellent — a mix of dedicated cycle paths and quiet roads. The terrain is largely flat along the river itself, with steeper climbs if you venture up into the vineyard slopes.
The Rhine Palatinate (Pfalz) region produces Germany's finest Rieslings, alongside excellent Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Dornfelder. Almost every village has a Weinstube where you can taste with the producer.
May to October covers the main season, with the Palatinate wine harvest in September and October adding a particularly atmospheric backdrop to the ride.
