Berlin is one of Europe's great cycling cities and the gateway to the waterway landscapes of Brandenburg. From the Oder-Havel Canal and the Ruppiner Lake District to the historic locks of the Finow waterway, the region around the German capital offers flat, scenic cycling through forests, lakes, and canal-side paths.
Our Berlin to Stralsund and Stralsund to Berlin bike and boat holidays use Berlin as the start or finish of a journey north to the Baltic Sea, following the Oder-Havel Canal and the Ruppiner Lake District before crossing into Poland at Szczecin and continuing to the islands of Usedom and Rügen.
Berlin combines the energy of one of Europe's most culturally rich capitals with remarkably easy access to quiet, natural landscapes. Within an hour of the city, the forests and waterways of Brandenburg open up to provide some of Germany's most relaxed cycling — along canal towpaths, through ancient forest, and beside lakes that gleam in the summer light. For cyclists on the Berlin to Stralsund route, the city is a fitting launch pad: vibrant and historically layered, before the pace slows dramatically as the waterways take over and the Baltic horizon draws ever closer.
Berlin has a continental climate with warm summers (20–28°C in July and August) and cold winters. The cycling season runs from April to October, with May, June, and September being the most pleasant months. Rain is spread fairly evenly through the year; bring a waterproof whatever the season.
The city and surrounding Brandenburg plain are almost completely flat, which makes cycling here accessible to all levels. The landscape north of Berlin is dominated by forest, lakes, and canals — the Oder-Havel Canal and Finow Canal both offer excellent flat towpath cycling. Wind can be a factor on exposed stretches between forest sections.

Berlin is well connected to UK airports, has superb direct Eurostar rail links, and sits at the junction of several long-distance cycle routes heading north to the Baltic coast, east along the Oder, south to the Elbe, and west along the Havel. The city itself is flat and bike-friendly.
The Oder-Havel Canal, the Havel River cycle path, and the Finow Canal offer flat waterside cycling through the forests and lakes of Brandenburg. The Berlin Wall Trail, the Ruppiner Seenland lake district, and the Schorfheide biosphere reserve all reward exploration by bike.
Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has direct flights from multiple UK airports. Alternatively, the Eurostar to Brussels or Amsterdam connects to high-speed ICE trains to Berlin in 8–9 hours total — or a comfortable overnight train.
