Starting in Lech am Arlberg, high in the Vorarlberg mountains, this route carries you through Tyrol and into Bavaria, where the alpine peaks give way to rolling countryside and colourful old towns.
This point-to-point tour blends dramatic mountain scenery, centuries-old traditions, and cultural treasures. You'll pass by fairytale castles, cross daring suspension bridges, and visit some of southern Germany’s most beautiful medieval towns. Begin your journey in the renowned alpine resort of Lech am Arlberg. Surrounded by majestic peaks, this stylish mountain town offers a spectacular setting to start your adventure. Take a gentle walk or enjoy a local dinner with mountain views.
Start the day with a scenic transfer to the Formarinsee, the source of the Lech River. From here, ride through the dramatic alpine landscapes of Vorarlberg and into Tyrol. Pass through the picturesque Walser village of Warth and continue to Steeg. A short detour to Holzgau reveals beautifully frescoed houses in the traditional Lüftlmalerei style.
Cycle past charming alpine hamlets and make time to visit the striking parish church in Häselgehr. Continue along the Lech to Forchach, where a suspension bridge offers brave riders a thrilling pause. Cross into Bavaria and arrive in Füssen, where the legendary castles of Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau await.
Leave the Alps behind as you ride through the green foothills along the shore of the Forggensee. Enjoy riverside stops by the Lechsee at Lechbruck before reaching the fortified town of Schongau. Explore its historic centre and perhaps unwind in a traditional beer garden.

Follow the river through quiet countryside dotted with cultural gems. Stop in Epfach to visit its Roman museum or pause at the Baroque pilgrimage church in Vilgertshofen. Your destination is Landsberg am Lech, a wonderfully preserved medieval town nestled in the river valley.
Cycle along one of the best-preserved sections of the ancient Via Claudia Augusta, from Landsberg to Kaufering. Ride past Königsbrunn and through the ducal town of Friedberg before reaching Augsburg, one of Germany’s oldest cities. Discover its rich heritage, including the Fuggerei, the Gothic cathedral, and the Renaissance fountains.
After breakfast, your tour comes to an end. Consider extending your stay in Augsburg to explore more of its fascinating history and vibrant café culture.

Getting to Lech am Arlberg (start of tour)
By train: to St. Anton am Arlberg or Langen am Arlberg, then bus to Lech am Arlberg, around 30 minutes (www.oebb.at, www.vmobil.at).
By plane: Innsbruck Airport (INN) is the nearest, with direct flights from several UK airports including easyJet from London Gatwick, plus seasonal charter services. From the airport, take a train to Langen am Arlberg then a bus to Lech (www.oebb.at, www.vmobil.at).
Parking: a limited number of free hotel parking spaces are available, or hotel parking costs approx. EUR 10 per day; public garage approx. EUR 10 per week.
Getting home from Augsburg (end of tour)
By train: Munich is around 45-60 minutes from Augsburg by regional or ICE train, with excellent onward flight connections from Munich Airport (MUC) back to the UK.
If you left a car at the start of the tour, a direct return route runs from Augsburg to Bludenz by train, then by bus to Lech am Arlberg, taking around 5 hours with 3 changes (in Lindau, Bludenz and Langen) (www.bahn.de, www.vmobil.at).
