Self-guided cycling holiday
Salzburg, Austria
From the cultural treasures of Salzburg to the sun-drenched shores of the Adriatic, this journey takes you across some of Europe’s most diverse and breathtaking landscapes. Follow the well-signposted Alpe-Adria Cycle Path through river valleys, Alpine passes, and gentle coastal plains. You’ll trace the ancient salt routes of the Celts, discover historic towns and charming villages, and enjoy regional cuisine that reflects the rich cultural mosaic of Austria and northern Italy.
Highlights
Great for active riders ready for rolling hills and longer days in the saddle—offering both challenge and beautiful scenery.
Arrive in the elegant city of Salzburg, known for its baroque architecture, lively music scene, and the legacy of Mozart. Wander through the old town’s winding alleyways, soak up the café culture, and admire views of the Hohensalzburg Fortress.
Overnight: Hotel Goldenes Theater or similar
Leave Salzburg and cycle south through lush river meadows along the Salzach River. Stop in the historic salt-mining town of Hallein, with its charming alleys and grand facades. Continue past Golling and its impressive waterfall before arriving in St. Johann, marked by the twin spires of the Pongau Cathedral.
Follow the Gasteiner Ache into the Gastein Valley, climbing gradually past Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein to reach the famous spa town of Bad Gastein. Marvel at its dramatic setting and landmark waterfall before boarding a short train through the Tauern Tunnel. On the other side, enjoy a thrilling descent into the Mölltal Valley.
Cycle along the Möll River, surrounded by alpine scenery, to reach Möllbrücke and the start of the Drau Valley. The trail follows the Drau River through sunny southern Austria. Stop in Spittal to visit the impressive Renaissance palace of Porcia before continuing to Villach with its Mediterranean flair and vibrant old town.
Skip the mountain pass by train and rejoin the route in Tarvisio, Italy. Glide downhill through the wooded Val Canale, with spectacular views of the Friulian Alps. Your day ends in or near Gemona, a charming village nestled at the base of the Julian Alps.
Start the day with a visit to Gemona’s striking cathedral, then pedal south through a landscape of rolling hills and the first vineyards of Friuli. Arrive in Udine, a lively city with elegant piazzas, Renaissance architecture, and a relaxed, Italian atmosphere.
Feel the sea air as you cycle through wetlands and along canals toward the Adriatic. Pause in Aquileia, once a thriving Roman city, with its ancient ruins and mosaics. Your journey ends in Grado, a delightful seaside town with a sandy beach, historic harbour, and charming old town brimming with seafood restaurants.
After breakfast, begin your journey home or extend your stay to relax by the sea.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Salzburg and returning from Salzburg.
