The lake district around Munich is one of Bavaria's greatest treasures, and this 8-day loop gives you the best of it. Starting and finishing in the Bavarian capital, you ride through lush meadows and forest paths to a succession of glittering lakes, charming traditional villages, and towns rich in baroque character.
The route heads south from Munich through the Forstenrieder Park to Lake Starnberg, continues to Murnau on the Staffelsee, and follows the Loisach River to Garmisch-Partenkirchen with its dramatic Alpine backdrop. An optional railway up the Zugspitze — Germany's highest mountain — is a spectacular add-on. The return leg loops through Wallgau, the turquoise Sylvensteinsee reservoir, and the elegant spa town of Bad Tölz before the final riverside ride back into Munich along the Isar.
Daily stages range from 23 to 46 miles on a gentle route, mostly on scenic cycle paths and quiet side roads. A few short climbs add character but nothing demanding. Accommodation is in 3-star hotels throughout, with a 4-star hotel in Munich.
Munich delights with its historic old town, excellent museums, and lively beer garden culture. Stroll through the English Garden, take a photo at the Marienplatz town hall, and stop at the Hofbräuhaus or a garden café for a hearty Bavarian meal. The city is a wonderful place to arrive a day early to explore.

You head south from Munich through the Forstenrieder Park, reaching Lake Starnberg where the cycle path hugs the lakeshore all the way to Seeshaupt. Passing the scenic Osterseen lakes and the Riegsee, you arrive at Murnau on the Staffelsee — a lively artists' town set against a spectacular Alpine panorama.

A shorter stage today, cycling through the Murnauer Moos — Central Europe's largest moorland — before following the Loisach River into the twin resort town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen. The day is deliberately short to allow time for the optional Zugspitze railway up to Germany's highest peak at 2,962 metres, with breathtaking views across the Alps.

From Garmisch you cycle north to the beautiful Barmsee before choosing your route: either directly to Wallgau, or via Mittenwald and the Karwendel foothills to the source of the Isar River. The longer option climbs 300 metres to Scharnitz but rewards with wild, romantic gorges and alpine meadow scenery. Wallgau is a village where Bavarian traditions are very much alive.

The Isar guides you through the Isarwinkel region past crystal-clear turquoise waters to the impressive Sylvensteinsee reservoir. Continuing through picturesque Lenggries, you arrive in the charming spa town of Bad Tölz — once a prosperous market town at the crossroads of two historic trade routes. The richly decorated historic townhouses along the main street are among the finest examples of Bavarian fresco painting.

Today's excursion takes you through the Tegernsee landscape to Gmund on the lake's northern shore, with stunning views across the water to the surrounding mountains. The return route follows the Gaißbach valley back to Bad Tölz. The bustling market street here is associated with a popular German crime series and makes for excellent evening wandering.

The Isar cycle path carries you north through Geretsried and Wolfratshausen to Grünwald, following the river's leafy banks back into the Bavarian capital. A few gentle climbs mark the final kilometres before Munich comes back into view — a fitting finale that brings you full circle.

Getting to Munich
By plane: Munich Airport (MUC) is one of Europe's busiest hubs, with direct flights from across the UK and Ireland. The S-Bahn S1 and S8 lines connect the airport to Munich city centre in around 40 minutes. Multiple airlines including Lufthansa, British Airways and easyJet serve Munich from London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin.
By train: Take the Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels or Paris, then a high-speed connection to Munich. The total journey is around 7–8 hours. Night trains from Paris or Brussels to Munich are also available, arriving refreshed and ready to ride.
Getting home from Munich
This is a loop tour returning to Munich, so your outbound and return travel use the same airport. Munich Airport has excellent onward connections worldwide.
