This is the full journey across Alsace.
Starting in the far north near the German border, you cycle south through the region’s shifting landscapes, from quiet forests and village lined countryside to the vineyards of the Wine Route and the cultural centres of Strasbourg and Colmar.
It’s a route that builds gradually. The early days feel rural and understated, with gentle hills, orchards and traditional villages. As you move south, the vineyards begin to define the landscape, and the rhythm of the journey changes. Wine villages appear more frequently, the architecture becomes more decorative, and the food and drink take centre stage.
Along the way, you pass through Strasbourg, follow canal paths towards Saverne, and then join the Wine Route through Obernai, Riquewihr and Kaysersberg. The journey finishes in Mulhouse, where Alsace’s industrial heritage offers a different perspective on the region.
This is not just a cycling route, it’s a gradual immersion into Alsace, its landscapes, its flavours and its way of life.
Tour Highlights
• Cycle the full length of Alsace from north to south
• Strasbourg, Colmar and Mulhouse in one journey
• The Alsace Wine Route and its best known villages
• Quiet forests, canals and vineyard landscapes
• Regional food and wine throughout the trip
• Strong sense of progression across the region
Arrive in Wissembourg, close to the German border. The town has a quiet, almost hidden feel, with its abbey and narrow streets offering a calm start to the journey. It’s a place that feels slightly removed from the busier parts of Alsace further south.
The ride begins gently, passing through orchards, meadows and small villages. In Hunspach, often listed among the most beautiful villages in France, traditional houses line the streets. The route then continues into the Haguenau forest, a vast and peaceful area, before reaching the town itself.
A slightly more rolling stage leads towards the Vosges foothills. Along the way, you can stop in Uberach to visit a local brewery before continuing to Saverne. The town sits beside the canal, overlooked by the Château des Rohan, giving it a relaxed but elegant feel.
Follow the Marne Rhine canal on a flat, easy route into Strasbourg. The approach into the city feels gradual, from quiet countryside into a lively urban centre. Strasbourg itself offers a contrast of historic streets and a more modern European identity.
Leave the city along the Bruche canal, once used to transport wine. The landscape becomes more rural again, with vineyards beginning to appear as you approach Obernai, marking the start of the Wine Route.
Choice of 25 or 34 mile ride.
This is where the journey shifts. The route now follows the Alsace Wine Route, passing through Mittelbergheim, Andlau and Ribeauvillé. Each village feels distinct, but all share the same sense of tradition and connection to the vines.
Choice of a 22 or 31 mile ride.
Ride through some of the most recognisable villages in Alsace, including Eguisheim and Kaysersberg. By the time you reach Colmar, the atmosphere becomes more lively, with canals, markets and a strong cultural presence.
Continue along the Wine Route through Turckheim and Rouffach. A highlight is the abbey of Murbach, set in a quieter, more secluded landscape at the foot of the mountains.
Choice of a 22 or 28 mile ride.
The final stage leaves the heart of the vineyards behind. Passing Ungersheim and its open air museum, the route leads into Mulhouse, where industrial heritage and modern culture meet. It’s a different side of Alsace, and a fitting end to a varied journey.
Choice of a 22 or 31 mile ride.
Depart after breakfast or extend your stay. A return to Wissembourg is possible by train via Strasbourg.
We recommend flying to Frankfurt or train via Paris and returning from Basel.
