Bruges is famous for its canals and medieval streets, but the Belgian coast just beyond it is a quieter kind of beautiful. This relaxed week rides out from historic Bruges to Ostend, the self-styled “queen of the coastal towns”, using it as a base for a few days of circular rides through polders, castles and seaside villages before returning to Bruges for a final coastal loop.
Along the way you'll pass the Belle Époque village of De Haan, the moated castles of d'Aertrycke and Wijnendale, the harbour town of Nieuwpoort and the historic centre of Veurne. Every ride is flat and easy, with plenty of time left over for the beach, a museum, or simply a coffee on a market square.
Settle into historic Bruges, a UNESCO World Heritage city whose canals, market squares and medieval streets have earned it the name 'Venice of the North'. Take your time exploring the old town, browsing the chocolate and beer shops, or simply people-watching from a canalside café. Overnight in Bruges.
Ride out through the peaceful village of Lissewege, one of the prettiest spots in the hinterland of the coast, then on to the seaside resort of Blankenberge, home to a Sealife Centre. You'll also pass through De Haan, known for its beautifully preserved Belle Époque architecture, before arriving in Ostend, sometimes called the queen of the Belgian coastal towns. A circular ride from Ostend through the coastal hinterland, taking in two very different castles: d'Aertrycke, built in 1869, and Wijnendale Castle, with a history stretching back eight centuries. The landscape here is classic Flemish polder country — flat, green and dotted with quiet villages. Overnight in Ostend.
Today's loop takes you to Nieuwpoort, one of Belgium's favourite seaside resorts, sitting at the mouth of the River Yser where you can explore the harbour and the Ysermonde nature reserve. The route continues to the historic town of Veurne, known for its cosy old centre and its annual Procession of the Penitents. Overnight in Ostend.
Ride back towards Bruges via Jabbeke, home to the Constant Permeke Museum of paintings and sculpture. You could also stop at the Beisbroek observatory to learn about the night sky, or the adjoining Nature Centre. Overnight in Bruges.
Your final ride explores the polder landscapes and dunes between Bruges and Knokke, the most fashionable resort on the Belgian coast. The highlight is the Zwin nature reserve, along with the picturesque town of Damme. If it's warm enough, a swim in the sea is well earned. Overnight in Bruges.

Getting to Brussels (start and end of tour)
By plane: Brussels Airport (BRU) at Zaventem is served by direct flights from most UK airports, with British Airways, easyJet, Ryanair and others flying the route in around 1 hour 20 minutes. From the airport, train to Bruges takes just over an hour with one change, or a bus/taxi transfer can be arranged from Bruges station.
By train: The Eurostar from London St Pancras reaches Brussels-Midi in around 2 hours, with a further direct IC train to Bruges taking around 55 minutes.
By car: Bruges is around 300km from Calais, taking approximately 2.5 to 3 hours via the E40.
