Guided cycling holiday
Scottish Highlands & Hebrides, Scotland
Begin and end in Oban on this immersive Scottish bike‑and‑boat adventure aboard the Flying Dutchman, your maritime hotel for the week. Cycle across the remote and dramatic landscapes of the Inner Hebrides: the Isle of Mull, Jura and the Kintyre Peninsula. Look out for red deer, eagles, otters, dolphins and seals as you sail between islands and ride along rugged shores.
Explore George Orwell’s secluded Jura, visit ancient stone circles at Kilmartin, and relax with a dram of whisky and traditional music in atmospheric pubs. With breakfast and one or two warm meals included on board, plus evenings ashore, you’ll experience local hospitality and aromatic cuisine. The tour blends daily exploration by bike with restful cruising, making it perfect for those wanting scenic variety, wildlife encounters and Scotland’s most iconic island destinations.
Ideal for a relaxed pace with short distances and gentle terrain—perfect for beginners, families, or laid-back sightseeing.
Your journey begins in the coastal town of Oban, the gateway to the Inner Hebrides. Whether you arrive by train, bus, or join our shared group transfer from Edinburgh, there’s time to settle in before boarding the Flying Dutchman. Cabins are ready from 6 pm, but if you arrive earlier, we can safely store your luggage while you explore the town. Wander along the harbourfront, browse local shops, or enjoy a cup of tea overlooking the sea. In the evening, we’ll gather for a welcome dinner on board. It’s a relaxed first night where you can meet the crew, your guides, and fellow cyclists, and get a feel for the rhythm of the week ahead. The ship remains docked overnight in Oban, allowing you the option to stretch your legs with an evening stroll or enjoy the lively yet laid-back atmosphere of one of Oban’s traditional pubs.
We begin the day with a hearty breakfast before getting fitted to our bikes. Today’s ride sets the tone beautifully, showcasing the hilly green landscapes that define this part of Scotland. Leaving Oban behind, we head south through rural scenery dotted with sheep and old stone cottages. Our route winds past a highland loch and leads us to the sea. From there, we cross the Clachan Bridge, known as the "Bridge over the Atlantic," to reach Seil Island. After a brief ride, we board a ferry to Luing, one of the historic Slate Islands. This small island played a major role in Scotland’s slate industry and offers a unique coastal charm. At the quaint village of Toberonochy, the Flying Dutchman awaits. We load the bikes and set sail for Crinan. The rest of the day is spent relaxing on deck as we cruise the waterway, enjoying views of forested hills and peaceful inlets.
Today’s ride is rich in history and natural beauty. After breakfast on board, we cycle inland towards the ancient Kilmartin Glen. This remarkable area is one of Scotland’s most important archaeological sites, home to standing stones, stone circles and burial cairns that date back over 5,000 years. Along the way, we pass by pastures and wooded hills, with birds of prey often spotted overhead. At the Kilmartin Museum, there’s time to explore the exhibits and enjoy lunch at the café. The museum offers a great insight into Scotland’s prehistoric cultures and how they lived in harmony with this rugged landscape. After lunch, we ride back to Crinan, where the ship is waiting. From here, we sail past the fabled Mull of Kintyre towards the remote Isle of Jura. As we cruise, keep your eyes open for seals, porpoises and seabirds that often follow the boat. We anchor for the night in a quiet bay off Jura.
Jura is one of the least-inhabited islands in Scotland, and that peacefulness makes today’s ride feel like stepping into another world. After breakfast, we cycle north through this wild and untamed landscape, with the towering Paps of Jura to our left and the sea to our right. Red deer are abundant here—you’re more likely to see them than people. This island is also where George Orwell lived while writing 1984, and he famously called Jura an “un-get-at-able” place. As we ride, the solitude is broken only by the wind in the grass and the call of seabirds. We finish the ride at a small dock, where the Flying Dutchman is ready to take us to Mull. During the sail, we pass through the Corryvreckan Strait, home to one of the world’s largest whirlpools. Our experienced crew navigates safely, and we drop anchor in a calm cove off the Isle of Mull for the night.
Today’s ride offers some of the most stunning views of the week. After breakfast, we disembark near Loch Spelve and head west across Mull. The route is undulating, with long stretches of quiet roads and open landscapes. As we pedal along the coast, the scenery shifts from craggy shorelines to rolling hills and lush meadows. Highland cattle graze lazily near the roadside, and if we’re lucky, we may spot an eagle circling above the cliffs. Traffic is virtually non-existent; the road splits at one point toward Iona, but our path continues north with just sheep for company. We pass sea lochs and travel through ancient woodlands, soaking up panoramic views across the Atlantic. Eventually, we reach Salen, a small coastal village with a peaceful harbour. The ship is moored here for the evening, and there’s time to unwind before dinner on board. The sunset over the bay is often breathtaking, so have your camera ready.
After breakfast, we cycle north through some of Mull’s most remote and captivating terrain. The ride starts with a climb through forested hills, but we’re rewarded with a break at a cosy local tearoom. Energised, we descend towards Calgary Bay, one of Scotland’s finest beaches. With its soft white sand and crystal-clear water, it’s a perfect spot for a rest or even a quick swim if the weather allows. Continuing on, we ride along narrow roads with sweeping sea views and occasional glimpses of seals basking on the rocks. The route includes a few more manageable climbs before descending into Tobermory, the island’s colourful main town. Famous for its painted waterfront buildings and relaxed charm, Tobermory is a highlight in itself. In the evening, there’s time to explore the town, visit a local pub, and sample traditional dishes such as haggis or fish and chips. The ship remains docked here overnight.
Our final day of cycling begins in Tobermory. We ride north through gentle terrain to Glengorm Castle, a 19th-century estate set against a backdrop of moorlands and distant isles. There’s time to walk the grounds, explore the gardens, and enjoy a warm drink in the castle’s inviting tearoom. The views from here are spectacular, stretching across the sea to the mainland and nearby islets. After visiting Glengorm, we cycle back to Tobermory to meet the ship for our final voyage. The sail back to Oban gives us time to reflect on the week’s adventures. Once we dock, there’s time to explore Oban, visit McCaig’s Tower for a panoramic view, pick up last-minute souvenirs, or simply relax by the harbour. Our final dinner is shared on board with the group, a fitting end to a scenic and memorable journey through Scotland’s western isles.
After breakfast, it’s time to say goodbye. You may choose to depart independently by train or bus, or join our group transfer back to Edinburgh Airport. As you leave Oban, you’ll carry with you more than just photos—you’ll have experienced the rhythm of the islands, cycled through landscapes few get to see, and shared it all with a small group of fellow travellers. We hope this is just the beginning of your pedal-powered adventures.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Glasgow International Airport (GLA) and returning from Glasgow International Airport (GLA).
