Highlights
Description
Burgundy is home to some of the most celebrated wines in the world, set against a landscape of gentle hills, medieval villages and historic towns. This route begins in Dijon, the former capital of the Dukes of Burgundy, before continuing through Beaune, the region's wine capital, and on south.
Along the way, expect Burgundy's famous cuisine at every turn: snails, Charolais beef, Bresse chicken, and some exceptional cheese. This is the full sweep of Burgundy in a single, easy-paced week.

Example accommodation: Hostellerie St Vincent, Nuits-Saint-Georges ***
Head south to Beaune, the Burgundy Wine Capital. A visit to the Hospices is a must, alongside cellars sheltering some of the region's finest crus and a stroll through the old town's narrow, paved streets.
Example accommodation: Hostellerie de la Bretonnière, Beaune ***
Ride through the vineyards on a bike path passing the wine-making villages of Pommard and Volnay, with plenty of tasting options along the way to Santenay. A short stretch alongside the canal brings you to the start of the Cote Chalonnaise, where your hotel offers both indoor and outdoor pools.
Example accommodation: Auberge du Camp Romain, Chassey-le-Camp ***
Quiet countryside routes lead you to a cycle track alongside the Canal du Centre, passing close to Rully before reaching Dracy-le-Fort, a small village on the edge of the Cote Chalonnaise vineyards. Your hotel here also has a swimming pool.
Example accommodation: Hôtel Le Dracy ***
Join the Green Way in Givry, built on an old rail line, the first cycle path in France. Take in the Romanesque architecture of Buxy, St-Gengoux-le-National and Malay, with the chance to stop for lunch and visit the castle in Cormatin, before reaching Cluny and its famous Abbey.
Example accommodation: Hôtel de Bourgogne, Cluny ***
Back on the cycle path towards Macon, with hillier scenery despite the easy gradient. Detour to the romantic Castle of Berze-le-Chatel, then cross the longest European tunnel open to cyclists, continuing through the Val Lamartinien with stunning views of the Solutre Rock.
Example accommodation: Ibis Mâcon Centre ***
After breakfast, return by train to Beaune, or take a high-speed TGV direct from Macon to Paris.
We recommend flying to Dijon and returning from Macon.
