The undisputed capital of Burgundy wine, Beaune sits at the heart of the Côte d'Or with some of the world's most prestigious vineyards on its doorstep. A walled medieval town with excellent cycling in every direction, it makes the perfect base for exploring the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits.
Our Beaune holidays are based in the town itself, with daily loop rides radiating out through the Côte de Beaune and Côte de Nuits. Luggage stays put all week, leaving you free to ride as far as you like and return at your own pace.
Beaune is the natural hub of Burgundy cycling. Surrounded in every direction by some of the world's most celebrated vineyards including Pommard, Volnay, Meursault, Puligny-Montrachet, Gevrey-Chambertin, Nuits-Saint-Georges. You can ride out each morning into a different appellation and be back for dinner. The Voie des Vignes connects the town north to Dijon and south to Santenay along 80km of signed cycle paths through UNESCO-listed vineyard landscapes.
Off the bike, Beaune itself rewards a slow morning. The Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices, a 15th-century charitable house whose annual wine auction is one of the most famous charity events in France, anchors a compact old town of wine merchants, cellars open to visitors, and excellent restaurants. The town's medieval ramparts are encircled by a ring road with its own bike path, a fine warmup before heading out into the vines.
Beaune has a continental climate with warm, dry summers and cold winters. The cycling season runs from March to October, with May, June and September offering the most comfortable conditions. July and August can be warm but the shade of the vineyard tracks makes even the hottest days manageable.
The terrain around Beaune is gently rolling rather than mountainous. The Voie des Vignes follows vineyard tracks and quiet lanes with modest gradients, suitable for most fitness levels. The hills to the west above the Hautes-Côtes offer more challenging riding for those looking for it.

“The Burgundy Climats - the name given to over 1,000 named parcels of vineyards contained within a 60km strip just 3km wide around Beaune - were added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2015.”
RobCo-founderMay to June and September to October are ideal — warm enough for comfortable cycling, with the vineyards at their most beautiful and winemakers available for tastings without the peak summer crowds.
The Voie des Vignes runs north to Dijon through the Côte de Nuits and south to Santenay through the Côte de Beaune. Routes are mostly gentle to moderately rolling, following vineyard tracks and quiet lanes through world-famous appellations.
The Hôtel-Dieu des Hospices de Beaune, with its iconic polychrome tiled roof, is unmissable. Clos de Vougeot, Château de Meursault, and the wine villages of Pommard, Volnay and Meursault are all easily reached by bike.
