A 6-night loop rather than a point-to-point, this route takes you from Freiburg into traditional Alsace and back again by way of Colmar, Obernai and Strasbourg, with a return leg through Germany's Kaiserstuhl vineyards.
It's a well-considered way to see both sides of the Rhine without doubling back on yourself, finishing where you started so there's no need to arrange a one-way journey home.
Highlights
Arrive in Freiburg with time to explore its Gothic cathedral and canals, and sunset views from the Schlossberg.
Follow the Breisgau-Radweg to Breisach, cross into France to visit Neuf-Brisach, and reach Colmar and the Unterlinden Museum.
A slightly hilly stage through the vineyards via Riquewihr, Ribeauvillé and Barr to Obernai.
Visit Rosheim's Romanesque church, then join the Bruche canal path into Strasbourg.
Cross the Jardin des Deux Rives to Kehl and ride a flat stage along the German side of the Rhine.
Ride through Riegel and Emmendingen, via the Landwasser forest, back to Freiburg. Departure or extension of the stay.
