Self-guided cycling holiday
Vienna, Austria • Salzburg, Austria

This route links two of Austria’s great cities - from Mozart’s Salzburg to imperial Vienna - with a backdrop of riverside riding, Baroque towns, monastery stops, and scenic bends in the Danube. Think quiet forests, historic squares, and classic Austrian landscapes, plus the odd Trappist beer for good measure. A trip for culture lovers who like to earn their strudel.
Highlights
Ideal for a relaxed pace with short distances and gentle terrain—perfect for beginners, families, or laid-back sightseeing.
Select the tour you are interested in to view the itinerary.
Arrive in Salzburg, Mozart’s hometown, packed with history and baroque charm. Wander the old town, visit Mozart’s birthplace, and take in landmarks like Mirabell Palace and the Hohensalzburg Fortress before tomorrow’s ride.
Leave Salzburg behind and stop in Oberndorf, home to the Silent Night chapel. Forest paths lead to Tittmoning, then onward to Burghausen, known for its atmospheric old town and the longest castle complex in Europe.
Ride via Braunau and spot birdlife along the riverbanks on the way to Obernberg. Don’t miss the Reichersberg Monastery. Continue to Schärding, famous for its colourful Baroque townhouses along the Silberzeile.
Cycle into Passau, where three rivers meet and it's worth a visit to its cathedral, home to the world’s largest church organ. Follow the Danube past Obernzell and Engelhartszell, home to Austria’s only Trappist brewery. Finish at the dramatic Schlögener Schlinge river bend, reached by ferry.
Enjoy a final look at the Schlögener bend before rolling through riverside towns Aschach, Ottensheim, and Wilhering. Continue to Linz for a coffee stop, then on to Enns, Austria’s oldest town, with its tower and Lauriacum Museum.
A riverside day via Grein, with its charming theatre and riverside castle. Ride through the Strudengau gorge and into the fringes of Austria’s wine region. Overnight in Marbach or Maria Taferl, home to a pilgrimage church perched high above the Danube.
Start with a visit to the grand Melk Abbey, then roll through the Wachau, stopping in pretty wine towns like Weißenkirchen, Dürnstein, and Krems. From here, take the train to Vienna and settle into Austria’s stylish capital.
Depart Vienna or extend your stay to explore more cafés, museums, and classical charm.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Salzburg and returning from VIenna.
