Andalusia, Spain
Explore the cultural crossroads of Europe and North Africa on this evocative cycling journey through Andalusia, Spain’s southernmost region. From ancient Roman roads to olive grove-lined railway paths, this tour combines vibrant Moorish heritage, medieval towns, and timeless traditions - all under the Andalusian sun.
Your route links some of Spain’s most iconic cities - Córdoba with its magnificent Mezquita, Seville with its flamenco soul—with whitewashed villages, olive oil heartlands, and a romantic rhythm that runs from bull ranches to baroque towns. Sample tapas and red wine in rustic taverns, relax in converted monasteries, and immerse yourself in a landscape shaped by centuries of conquest, faith, and fiesta.
Highlights
Challenging
Tailored for experienced and adventurous cyclists, these routes feature steep climbs, rolling hills, and extended daily distances. You’ll need a good level of fitness to tackle these demanding itineraries, but the stunning landscapes and sense of achievement make it all worthwhile. Ideal for those who thrive on physical challenges and scenic rewards.
Begin your adventure in Antequera, known for its 30 church spires and rich baroque architecture. Take a stroll through the historic centre or enjoy sunset views from the Alcazaba fortress.
After a morning bike fitting and welcome briefing, pedal along a disused railway line through rolling countryside to Lucena, located in the heart of Spain’s olive oil belt. This is one of the world’s most important olive oil-producing areas, with centuries-old mills dotting the route.
Continue cycling the Via Verde del Aceite, a greenway lined with endless olive groves. Ride through the towns of Cabra and Zuheros, known for their whitewashed houses and dramatic mountain backdrops, before reaching Doña Mencía in the Subbética Natural Park.
Choice of a longer 28-mile route.
Cycle through the quiet foothills of the Sierra Morena, past farms where prized Andalusian fighting bulls are bred. Arrive in Córdoba, once the capital of Al-Andalus and a beacon of Islamic culture in Europe. Visit the iconic Mezquita, a vast forest of red-and-white arches built atop a former Visigothic church.
Follow a route along the Guadalquivir River, cycling through the fertile valley on an old Roman road. Stop in Écija, known for its equestrian heritage, before continuing to Palma del Río, where Franciscan monks once departed for the Americas.
Ride through the Campiña of Seville, a gentle landscape of grain fields and sunbaked plains. Your destination is Carmona, a town frozen in time, ringed by Moorish walls and filled with palaces, monasteries, and atmospheric cobbled lanes.
Cycle across the Alcores Plateau through the breadbasket town of Alcalá de Guadaíra, one of the cradles of flamenco. You’ll pass historic haciendas before arriving in Brenes, where you board a train to Seville. In the Andalusian capital, explore a city where Moorish minarets meet modernist marvels and where Carmen, Don Juan, and Figaro once roamed the opera stage.
Depart after breakfast or extend your stay in Seville, soaking in more art, flamenco, and culinary delights—or even plan a side trip to Granada or the Costa de la Luz.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Malaga and returning from Seville.
