Bike & Boat • Guided cycling holiday
Danube Delta, Romania
Embark on a unique adventure through one of Europe’s last great natural paradises - the Danube Delta. This remarkable cycling and boat holiday blends exploration, wildlife, and cultural discovery as you journey through Romania’s most stunning landscapes.
Sail aboard a comfortable floating hotel as you glide along the Danube’s tranquil waters, cycling through remote fishing villages, reed islands, and serene wetlands teeming with pelicans, cormorants, and herons. Experience local hospitality, savour authentic Romanian cuisine, and enjoy expert guidance as you explore the region’s rich flora, fauna, and history.
Each day brings a new perspective on this UNESCO World Heritage site, from the peaceful canals of the Delta to the point where the mighty Danube meets the Black Sea. This is a journey for those who love nature, culture, and the slower rhythm of life along the river.
A comfortable mix of flat paths and light hills. Great for riders wanting a scenic, flexible trip without too much effort.
Your adventure begins in Bucharest, Romania’s vibrant capital. Upon arrival, you’ll meet your group for a comfortable afternoon transfer (around 4 hours) to Tulcea, the gateway to the Danube Delta. After boarding your floating hotel, settle into your cabin and enjoy your first dinner on board.
As you cruise along the quiet waterways, the sounds of the city fade into the distance, replaced by the gentle rhythm of the river and the calls of distant waterbirds. It’s the perfect introduction to the peaceful pace that will define your week ahead. Overnight on board in Tulcea.
After breakfast, your cycling journey begins along the southern branch of the Danube. The route takes you through the Bestepe Hills, offering spectacular views over the vast delta below. The terrain is gently rolling, with a few climbs rewarded by panoramic scenery and peaceful countryside.
You’ll pass through small fishing villages where time seems to stand still, their wooden houses painted in shades of blue and white. At Murighiol, you’ll leave the bikes and board a small boat to weave through narrow canals and floating reed islands, spotting herons and pelicans along the way. The day ends in Sfântu Gheorghe, where the Danube finally meets the Black Sea. Overnight on the hotel boat.
Today’s ride takes you to one of the most iconic spots on the Danube — Kilometre 0, the point where the river ends and the Black Sea begins. Cycling along a gravel track bordered by lush green reeds on one side and the open sea on the other, you’ll feel the peaceful isolation of the delta.
Keep an eye out for the Great White Egret and the majestic Dalmatian Pelican, both of which call this region home. Your route leads to Sulina, a charming town where you’ll visit the old lighthouse that marks the river’s end. Enjoy a relaxed evening on board, perhaps watching the sunset where river meets sea.
Today, you’ll experience the Danube Delta in all its natural glory from the comfort of your floating hotel. Cruise through a labyrinth of narrow waterways lined with reeds and water lilies. Along the way, you’ll spot pelicans gliding gracefully overhead, cormorants drying their wings, and herons wading in the shallows.
This is one of Europe’s richest habitats for wildlife, and your expert guide will share insights into the fragile ecosystem that sustains it. In the afternoon, the boat returns to Tulcea, offering a gentle transition back from the untouched wilderness to the rhythm of daily life.

After breakfast, you’ll set off on a scenic circular route through rolling hills and quiet countryside. The first stop is the Celic Dere Monastery, the largest convent in the region and an important spiritual centre. Continue to Saon Monastery, beautifully situated among vineyards with its distinctive windmill.
From the ridge nearby, enjoy breathtaking views over the floodplain that borders Ukraine. The ride ends back in Tulcea, where you’ll spend the night in a comfortable 4-star guesthouse.
Today’s ride begins with a transfer to Ceamurlia de Jos, an ancient settlement near the lagoon. From here, you’ll cycle through the Cape Doloșman Nature Reserve, home to the fascinating Greek-Roman ruins of Argamum. Continue along quiet country roads to Enisala Fortress, a medieval stronghold perched high above the lagoon with panoramic views over Lake Razim.
This area offers a perfect blend of history and nature. As the day ends, you’ll return to Tulcea for your final overnight stay, reflecting on the unforgettable beauty of the Danube Delta.
After breakfast, bid farewell to the Danube Delta and your floating hotel. A coach will transfer you back to Bucharest, arriving at the airport around 2 p.m. For safety, flights should be booked for 4 p.m. or later. If you have time, consider extending your stay in Bucharest or Tulcea to explore more of Romania’s charm.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP) and returning from Bucharest Henri Coandă International Airport (OTP).
Your boat serves as both your accommodation and base between cycling stages. It features a sun deck for relaxing, a restaurant serving fresh Romanian specialities, and a separate support boat that collects cyclists even from narrow waterways – so you’re never far from comfort. The ship runs on solar power and lithium batteries, creating a quiet, eco-friendly experience with minimal engine noise, perfect for enjoying the Delta's natural surroundings. Cabins are simple but comfortable, around 9m², with two separate beds, windows that open, insect screens and private bathroom with toilet and shower. Please note that cabins are not air-conditioned, but evenings on the water are usually pleasantly cool. Full board is included – breakfast, a packed lunch for your ride, and a freshly prepared hot dinner each evening. Vegetarian meals are available on request.
