Guided cycling holiday
Sicily, Italy
Cycle and hike through the volcanic Aeolian Islands on this guided island-hopping tour. You’ll travel aboard a traditional wooden caique, sailing between Sicily’s northeastern coast and the UNESCO-listed Aeolian archipelago.
Each day features a mix of guided cycling and walking excursions on islands such as Vulcano, Panarea, Stromboli, Salina, and Lipari. You’ll ride to scenic viewpoints, walk to ancient villages, and swim in natural sea pools or coastal bays. In the evenings, relax on board or enjoy local food ashore. E-bikes are available, and all daily activities are supported by an experienced tour leader.
A comfortable mix of flat paths and light hills. Great for riders wanting a scenic, flexible trip without too much effort.
Welcome to Sicily! Today marks the start of your island adventure. Make your way to Milazzo harbour, where embarkation begins at 6:00 pm at Marina di Nettuno. After settling into your cabin aboard the Sundial, meet your crew and fellow travellers over a welcome drink. We’ll have a delicious dinner on board, followed by a briefing about the week ahead. You'll spend the night docked in the lively harbour of Milazzo.
After breakfast, hop on your bike for your first ride along the scenic coast to Capo Milazzo. Don’t forget your swimwear, as we’ll stop at the stunning natural sea pool known as the Venus Pool – perfect for a refreshing dip. Later, head back to Milazzo and take some time to explore the impressive castle and its surrounding old town. We’ll stay another night in Milazzo harbour, so you can enjoy the relaxed pace of this charming coastal town.
This morning, we set sail for Vulcano, one of the most fascinating of the Aeolian Islands. Known for its dramatic volcanic features and sulphur-rich soil, the island offers a unique backdrop for today’s ride. You’ll cycle inland to Piano Grillo, where panoramic views await. In the afternoon, enjoy some free time: hike up to the volcano’s crater, take a dip in the famous sulphur mud baths, or swim among underwater volcanic vents at the beach. We’ll anchor overnight in the peaceful harbour of Vulcano.
After breakfast, we cruise towards Panarea, stopping along the way for a swim near the volcanic islets of Lisca Bianca, Bottaro, and Dattilo. Once anchored off Panarea, enjoy lunch on board surrounded by crystal-clear waters. Later, we continue to Stromboli, where the real adventure begins. In the late afternoon, take a guided hike up to around 400 metres (1,312 ft) above sea level for a front-row seat to Stromboli’s legendary volcanic activity. As the sun sets, enjoy a picnic dinner at a scenic viewpoint. Make sure to pack a head torch for the descent, as we return in the dark. We’ll anchor in a sheltered bay near Stromboli for the night.
This morning we sail back to Panarea, anchoring at Porto San Pietro. From here, we set off on a walk to discover the island’s laid-back charm. Highlights include Drautto Beach and the remains of a prehistoric village. We’ll have a picnic lunch at Cala Junco, one of the most picturesque spots on the island. After the walk, we return to the boat and cruise on to Salina, where you’ll have the chance to sample local delicacies and perhaps browse a few shops. We’ll spend the night in Salina’s cosy harbour.
Today’s ride takes you across Salina, starting from Santa Marina on the east coast. You’ll pedal through lush landscapes to reach Pollara, a viewpoint with stunning sea views on the west coast. On the way back, don’t miss a visit to Lingua, where a shimmering salt lake sits just inland from the coast. While you’re there, cool down with a traditional granita – a local favourite. In the afternoon, we sail to Lipari, the largest of the Aeolian Islands. Take a relaxed stroll through its charming streets before settling in for the night at Lipari harbour.
After breakfast, saddle up for a scenic coast-to-coast cycle across Lipari. Start from the historic centre and head to the coastal village of Canneto, known for its pebble beaches and calm waters. We’ll stop for a picnic lunch at the stunning lookout point of Quattrocchi, offering sweeping views of the coastline. Afterwards, return to town and enjoy some last-minute shopping or gelato before we set sail one last time. The Sundial will take you back to Milazzo, where you can enjoy your final evening at one of the town’s local restaurants. Overnight in Milazzo harbour.
It’s time to say goodbye. After breakfast, disembark by 9:00 am. We hope you leave with incredible memories of volcanic landscapes, refreshing swims, and unforgettable rides across the Aeolian Islands.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Palermo Airport (PMO) and returning from Palermo Airport (PMO).
