The greenest of the Greek islands, Corfu blends Venetian architecture, olive-covered hills and turquoise bays into one of the Mediterranean's most rewarding cycling destinations.
Corfu is unlike anywhere else in Greece. Four centuries of Venetian rule left behind a capital of Baroque churches, colonnaded streets and a cricket ground on the seafront Esplanade — a combination that still feels faintly improbable and utterly charming. Beyond the old town, the island opens up into rolling hills blanketed in olive trees, cypress groves and quiet lanes connecting whitewashed villages.
The cycling here is scenic and varied. The south offers flat coastal roads and long sandy beaches, while the central hills and the north around Mount Pantokrator provide more challenging terrain with sweeping views across to Albania and the Greek mainland. The island is compact enough to explore thoroughly in a week, with the bonus of ferry connections to neighbouring Ionian islands for longer boat-and-bike adventures.
Corfu has the highest rainfall of any Greek island, which is why it stays so green year-round. The cycling season runs from March to November, with May, June and September the most comfortable months. July and August can be hot and busy, though the sea breeze makes coastal riding manageable.
Terrain varies significantly across the island. The south and the coastal roads are mostly flat to gently rolling, while the interior and north offer steeper climbs. E-bikes are available and recommended for hillier itineraries.

“Corfu has more than four million olive trees — many of them planted by the Venetians who ruled the island for over 400 years.”
LukeCo-founderApril to June and September to October are ideal — warm enough to swim but cooler than the peak summer heat, with the island at its most lush and fragrant.
The north and centre are genuinely hilly, with some steep climbs around Pantokrator. The south and coastal routes are gentler. E-bikes are available and make a real difference on hillier days.
Its Venetian heritage gives Corfu a distinctly Italian character — the old town, the cuisine, even the architecture feel different to the rest of Greece. It's also exceptionally green, thanks to abundant rainfall.
