Algarve, Portugal
From Moorish castles to wild Atlantic cliffs and mountain serenity
This gentle and relaxing tour explores the diverse landscapes and charming towns of the Western Algarve, with a well-placed rest day midway through the week. From the Moorish history of Silves to the dramatic cliffs of the West Coast and the fresh mountain air of Monchique, the journey offers a rich mix of culture, coastline, and countryside. Mostly following quiet tarmac roads with occasional dirt tracks, this is a ride to savour—filled with stops at local cafés, scenic viewpoints, and hidden villages where time seems to stand still.
Moderate
Suited for cyclists with a reasonable level of fitness, these trips offer a mix of terrain, including moderate climbs and rolling hills. Daily distances are longer, providing a satisfying balance of activity and exploration. Perfect for those who enjoy a rewarding ride with scenic routes and varied challenges.
We’ll meet you on arrival in the Algarve and fit you with your bikes before transferring you to the charming riverside town of Silves. Once the Moorish capital of the region, Silves is rich in history and home to the best-preserved castle in the Algarve. Climb the steep, cobbled streets to the castle for stunning views over the terracotta rooftops and surrounding countryside. Perhaps pause for a drink at the café by the castle entrance, where live music often drifts through the air. With its quiet charm and winding backstreets, Silves is a delightful place to begin your journey.
17 km | 187 m elevation gain
Today’s ride is a short and easy descent to the coast—perfect for a leisurely start. Before leaving Silves, pause on the Roman bridge for one of the best views back over the town and its hilltop castle. A quiet riverside track leads you towards Estômbar, a typical Portuguese village that has remained untouched by mass tourism. From here, continue to Ferragudo, a lovely fishing village overlooking the Arade estuary.
Plan to arrive around lunchtime—there are excellent fish restaurants both in the square and by the waterfront. After lunch, cross the bridge into Portimão, the region’s largest town, and follow the scenic riverfront to Praia da Rocha. Your guesthouse overlooks one of the Algarve’s largest beaches, backed by striking cliffs and golden sands.
Today’s coastal ride takes you through Alvor, a relaxed fishing village where narrow cobbled streets lead to a peaceful riverfront promenade. Despite the damage from the 1755 earthquake, the charm of the village remains intact.
From Alvor, head inland to skirt around the estuary, then cycle back down through country lanes to the long curve of Meia Praia beach. Continue into Lagos, a vibrant town where ancient walls enclose a maze of cobbled streets filled with shops, restaurants, and cafés. The town’s marina and waterfront are especially lively in the evening—perfect for dinner with a view.
Today’s ride is more challenging as you follow the undulating coast towards the wild cliffs of Sagres. The route passes through Luz, a laid-back beach town with a wide promenade, and the charming villages of Burgau and Salema, each offering a peaceful diversion and a taste of authentic Algarve life.
After these coastal stops, you’ll head inland via quiet back roads to Vila do Bispo, then cross a windswept plateau to reach Sagres. Known for its dramatic scenery and historical significance, Sagres feels like the edge of the world—and in centuries past, it was exactly that.
Spend your rest day exploring Sagres, a sleepy town with a rich maritime legacy. Visit the 15th-century fortress built by Henry the Navigator, and, if you’re feeling active, ride the short round trip (12 km) to Cabo de São Vicente, the southwesternmost point of mainland Europe. The cliffs are staggering, and the lighthouse—one of the most powerful in Europe—is an iconic sight.
Alternatively, simply relax on the beach, explore the pretty harbour, or unwind in the town square with a fresh seafood lunch and a glass of local wine.
From the ‘end of the world’, today you head north along the wild and unspoilt Costa Vicentina. Retrace your steps to Vila do Bispo and follow a scenic inland road through wildflower-strewn landscapes. A detour to Pedralva, a once-abandoned village lovingly restored, offers a glimpse of traditional rural life.
Stop for lunch in Carrapateira, where fishermen, surfers, and farmers coexist along the dramatic coastline. From the nearby Pontal da Carrapateira, soak up views of the immense Bordeira beach, a mecca for surfers and nature lovers alike.
Continue to Aljezur, nestled in a lush green valley. This former Moorish town is famed for its sweet potatoes—widely regarded as the tastiest in Portugal. If visiting in autumn, don’t miss the town’s lively Sweet Potato Festival.
Your final ride is short but demanding, as you climb from sea level into the Serra de Monchique mountains. The ascent begins just outside Aljezur and rewards you with sweeping views across the southern Algarve. At Marmelete, pause at the popular café frequented by cyclists before continuing through pine forests and deep valleys toward Monchique.
This peaceful market town is a rewarding place to end your journey. Wander its cobbled streets, enjoy a celebratory meal at a hilltop restaurant, or head to nearby Caldas de Monchique, famous for its thermal springs and spa treatments.
Feeling strong? Challenge yourself to the optional 8 km climb to Foia, the Algarve’s highest peak, for panoramic views stretching all the way to the coast.
After a final breakfast in the mountains, we’ll transfer you from Monchique for your onward journey.
