Self-guided cycling holiday
Algarve, Portugal

Portugal’s Algarve coast is a dream destination for cyclists. With over 300 days of sunshine a year, golden beaches, and charming towns, it offers the perfect mix of activity and relaxation. On this 8-day cycling holiday, you’ll explore the Algarve from west to east, starting at Cape St. Vincent, Europe’s most south-westerly point, and finishing on the Spanish border at Vila Real de Santo António.
Along the way, you’ll ride past dramatic cliffs, peaceful bays, and colourful fishing villages. The lively towns of Lagos, Albufeira, and Faro bring contrast with their buzzing squares, markets and restaurants. Seafood lovers will be spoiled for choice, while wine enthusiasts can pair their rides with a taste of Portugal’s finest.
One of the highlights is cycling through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, a lagoon landscape home to flamingos and other birdlife. Daily stages range from 22 to 38 miles, with moderate hills and rewarding views. Nights are spent in hand-picked hotels offering comfort and a touch of charm, ensuring you finish each day rested and ready for the next.
Whether it’s spring warmth or autumn sunshine, the Algarve is a beautiful region to explore by bike.
A comfortable mix of flat paths and light hills. Great for riders wanting a scenic, flexible trip without too much effort.
Your adventure begins in the small but striking town of Sagres, located at the very tip of the Algarve. Known for its rugged cliffs, windswept views, and fascinating maritime history, this is the perfect starting point for your journey. You might like to stroll through the town’s narrow streets, stopping at a café to enjoy a first taste of Portuguese hospitality, or head towards the impressive 15th-century fortress, which once protected Portugal’s seafarers. From here, the panoramic views stretch endlessly across the Atlantic.
If you prefer something more relaxed, Sagres is also surrounded by some of the most beautiful beaches in the region. Whether you are drawn to sheltered sandy coves or the wide, untamed stretches where surfers gather, you will find a spot to unwind before your cycling begins. This evening, enjoy a relaxed dinner at one of the local restaurants where freshly caught fish and seafood are the highlight. You will stay overnight at a welcoming hotel, such as the stylish Memmo Baleeira, which is well-situated to take in the atmosphere of this coastal gem.
Your cycling adventure begins at Cape St. Vincent, the southwesternmost point of Europe. Standing on the cliffs, it’s easy to see why this place was once thought of as the end of the world. The lighthouse still watches over the Atlantic, and the views are breathtaking. From here, you cycle along a stretch of coastline filled with rugged cliffs, sandy coves, and rolling waves. You’ll pass small fishing villages where life moves at a slower pace, and you can stop for a coffee or snack by the sea. The ride back to Lagos has some gentle climbs but rewards you with coastal panoramas. On arrival, spend another night in this vibrant town.
Today’s stage begins with the long sandy sweep of Meia Praia beach, a wonderful place to pause for a refreshing dip in the sea if you wish. At low tide, you will see beachcombers searching for shellfish, a reminder of how deeply life here is tied to the ocean. You then cycle inland towards the village of Odiáxere, where the 16th-century church is worth a short visit. The atmosphere here is calm and traditional, with locals gathering in the square.
Continuing on, you reach Alvor, a town with Moorish heritage. Its old streets, small squares, and the charming Morabito de São Pedro chapel give you a sense of the region’s layered history. This is also a great place to stop for lunch, where the daily catch is usually the freshest option.
The final section of today’s route brings you back to the coast. Take a break at Praia da Rocha, one of the Algarve’s best-known beaches with its dramatic cliffs and lively promenade. A short ride more leads you into Portimão, a bustling town on the Arade River. Spend the evening strolling along the waterfront or exploring the local dining scene. Overnight stay at Turim Presidente Hotel.
You start the day cycling along the river Arade towards Ferragudo, a pretty fishing village with a lovely church perched above the estuary. The views across the water are especially scenic here. Leaving the coast for a while, the route takes you past olive groves, cypress trees, citrus orchards, and cork oaks, giving a more rural feel to today’s ride.
Arriving in Lagoa, you may want to try one of the town’s traditional pastries at a local bakery. A short detour brings you to the Senhora da Rocha chapel, which sits dramatically on a rocky outcrop above the sea, offering one of the most iconic viewpoints in the Algarve.
The ride then continues along a series of wide sandy beaches, each more tempting than the last. Your destination is Albufeira, one of the Algarve’s most popular holiday towns. Known for its vibrant old centre and lively atmosphere, it offers plenty of opportunities to enjoy Portuguese cuisine and perhaps some nightlife. Overnight accommodation is typically at Vila Galé Cerro Alagoa.
Today you cycle eastwards, beginning with a visit to Olhos de Água, a village famous for its freshwater springs that bubble up on the beach. It is a great spot to pause and enjoy the sand and sea. Continuing along the coast, you reach Vilamoura, home to one of the largest marinas in Portugal. The luxurious yachts and lively promenade make an interesting contrast to the small fishing villages you have passed through.
The route then leads through pine forests, offering some cooling shade, before bringing you into the Ria Formosa Natural Park. This protected area is one of Portugal’s seven natural wonders, with lagoons, marshes, and barrier islands that are home to countless bird species. Cycling through this landscape is both peaceful and fascinating, especially if you enjoy spotting wildlife.
Before long you arrive in Faro, the capital of the Algarve. Its historic centre is surrounded by ancient city walls, with cobbled streets leading to squares filled with restaurants and shops. The lively atmosphere, combined with its mix of medieval and baroque architecture, makes for an excellent evening. Overnight stay at AP Eva Senses Hotel.
You set out again through the Ria Formosa Natural Park, this time riding alongside salt pans that glisten in the sunlight. With offshore islands visible in the distance and the reflection of the sky mirrored in the shallow waters, this is one of the most memorable stretches of the route.
A first stop is Olhão, where the busy market is a great place to take a break. Watch locals bargaining for fresh produce or enjoy a coffee in one of the nearby cafés. Continuing along the coast, you reach Fuseta, a small fishing town with whitewashed houses and a slower pace of life.
The day’s cycling ends in Tavira, a town often described as one of the Algarve’s most charming. Spanning the river Gilão, Tavira is known for its Roman bridge, historic churches, and tiled houses. The relaxed atmosphere makes it a wonderful place to spend the evening, perhaps with a meal of grilled fish or seafood. Accommodation is at Vila Galé Tavira.
Your final full day of cycling takes you once again through the landscapes of the Ria Formosa, with its mix of lagoons and sandbanks. The route continues into pine forests before reaching Monte Gordo, a beach resort with wide golden sands. From here you ride through dune forests to Vila Real de Santo António, a town right on the border with Spain. The Guadiana River here marks the natural divide between the two countries.
You follow the river northwards for a while, enjoying the tranquil scenery and the sight of fishing boats on the water. The return journey leads you inland across gentle hills, where you pass groves of oranges and olives before arriving back in Tavira.
This evening is a chance to celebrate the week’s cycling adventure. A toast in one of Tavira’s traditional restaurants is the perfect way to reflect on the landscapes, towns, and coastlines you have discovered. Overnight at Vila Galé Tavira.
After breakfast, your tour comes to an end. Depending on your plans, you may travel onward, return home, or choose to extend your stay in Tavira or Lisbon. This journey through Portugal’s southern coast offers a blend of cycling, history, and seaside scenery that will stay with you long after you have left.
Flights are not included with this holiday, but we recommend flying to Faro Airport (FAO) and returning from Faro Airport (FAO).
