Algarve, Portugal
Discover the Algarve beyond the brochures. This 7-day journey follows the entire southern coast of Portugal from the Spanish border to the dramatic cliffs of Cabo de São Vicente. You’ll ride past quiet fishing villages, bustling seaside towns, salt flats, and forested trails—always with the Atlantic as your companion. Designed as a self-guided holiday, this tour gives you the freedom to ride at your own pace and stop whenever something catches your eye - be it a beach café, historic fort, or a peaceful lagoon. From the cultural charm of Tavira to the windswept headlands of Sagres, each day delivers new discoveries and unforgettable views.
Leisurely
Designed for cyclists who enjoy a laid-back journey with a bit of variety. Expect mostly flat routes with some gentle hills, offering a manageable and enjoyable ride. Daily distances are moderate, making these holidays a great way to explore beautiful landscapes without feeling rushed or overextended.
We’ll greet you on arrival and transfer you to Vila Real de Santo António (VRSA), an elegant town on the banks of the Guadiana River, marking the border with Spain. Rebuilt after the 1755 earthquake on a grand grid plan, VRSA retains a laid-back character. Relax in the orange tree-lined square, sample fresh seafood, and enjoy your first evening soaking up the atmosphere of this riverside gem.
Today’s ride winds westward along the coast, beginning with the beach resort of Monte Gordo and its palm-lined promenade. You’ll then pass into the cooling pine forest of Mata Nacional da Dunas Litorais—a haven for flora and fauna.
Take time to explore the sleepy coastal villages of Manta Rota and Caçela Velha, where whitewashed houses sit atop a bluff with panoramic views across the lagoon. The fishing hamlet of Fabrica offers the perfect spot for a coffee by the water’s edge.
Your day finishes in the historic town of Tavira, straddling the River Gilão. With its Roman bridge, castle ruins, tiled facades, and vibrant café scene, it’s a highlight of the eastern Algarve.
Continue west through the charming fishing village of Santa Luzia, famous for octopus, and Pedras del Rei, gateway to Barril Beach. In Fuseta, enjoy lunch by the water as fishing boats bob gently offshore.
Joining the Ecovia Litoral, a traffic-free coastal path, you cycle through the Ria Formosa Natural Park—one of Portugal’s most prized ecosystems. Ride past salt flats shimmering in the sun, spotting flamingos and other birdlife as you go.
End the day in Olhão, a lively fishing town with Moorish architecture, bustling markets, and ferry connections to island beaches.
Your route takes you through Faro, the Algarve’s capital. Stroll through the Arco da Vila into the old town, visit the cathedral or even the eerie ‘Chapel of Bones,’ and enjoy a coffee on the marina.
From Faro, cycle past salt pans toward the pine-shaded luxury resorts of Quinta do Lago and Vale do Lobo. Follow the scenic cliff tops to Quarteira, then continue to the cosmopolitan marina town of Vilamoura, your stop for the night.
A varied and rewarding ride today, starting along dirt tracks by Falesia Beach. Pass through Olhos de Água and Albufeira, then roll through the protected wetlands and boardwalks of Salgados.
Stop in Armação de Pêra for a sea-view snack before heading inland to the charming town of Lagoa. Its cobbled streets and relaxed cafés offer a break before descending toward Ferragudo—a pretty fishing village perched above the river estuary.
Cross into bustling Portimão and follow the waterfront to the beachside resort of Praia da Rocha, where your cliff-top guesthouse offers sweeping Atlantic views.
Cycle through Alvor, a laid-back town with cobbled streets and views over the estuary. Skirt the long sands of Meia Praia to reach Lagos—one of the Algarve’s most vibrant towns. Wander its old walled centre, explore the marina, or linger for lunch in a sunny plaza.
Your route continues west along the coast to Praia da Luz, a lively beach resort known for its relaxing vibe and dramatic cliffs. Enjoy the promenade, browse the artisan stalls, or challenge yourself with a hike up the black rock headland for panoramic views.
Your final ride is one of contrasts—tiny cliff-top villages, open countryside, and rugged Atlantic headlands. Visit the peaceful hamlets of Burgau and Salema before joining a scenic inland route to Vila do Bispo.
From here, a wild and windswept landscape leads you to Sagres, steeped in maritime history. Visit Henry the Navigator’s fortress before finishing at the lighthouse of Cabo de São Vicente—the southwesternmost point of Europe. The sea views are staggering, and the sense of journey’s end is unforgettable.
We’ll transfer you to your final accommodation in the market town of Loulé—a relaxed spot to reflect on your ride and enjoy one last Portuguese evening.
We’ll transfer you to the airport for your journey home.
