The reverse of the Berlin–Stralsund route, this journey begins on the Baltic Sea island of Rügen and works its way south through the Oder waterways to Berlin. Starting from Stralsund’s UNESCO-listed historic centre, you take in the chalk cliffs and traditional villages of Rügen, the unique landscapes of Usedom island, the Polish port city of Szczecin, and the historic locks and canals of the Finow waterway before the Oder carries you to Berlin.
The MS Princess is a comfortable river cruise vessel with 49 outside cabins across two decks, all with en-suite bathrooms. Full board, an on-board guide, and all harbour fees are included. The ship has a restaurant, a salon, a sun deck accessible by stair lift, and secure bike storage on board.
Daily cycling ranges from 15 to 31 miles on mostly traffic-free paths and country roads — flat with occasional gentle hills. Staying on board on any given day is always an option. Note: a minimum of 70 participants is required for this tour to operate.
Individual arrival in Stralsund, embarkation at 4 pm. Take time before boarding to explore the UNESCO-listed historic centre — its red-brick Gothic churches, the Ozeaneum maritime museum, and the charming old town streets are all within easy reach of the pier.
Cycling from Stralsund across the Rügen Dam through Gustow, Poseritz, and Groß Schoritz to Putbus — a remarkable town whose classical buildings line a circular ‘Circus’ square where all streets converge. The ship departs from Lauterbach in the evening for the overnight passage to Usedom.
Three cycling options on Usedom: a short route directly to Peenemünde with time to visit the Historical-Technical Museum; a medium route via Karlshagen with a detour to the Baltic; or a longer beach route through the resorts of Zinnowitz and Trassenheide. From Wolgast, the ‘Gateway to Usedom’, the medieval old town with its town hall and Church of St Petri is worth a visit.
A full day on board as the ship crosses the vast Bay of Szczecin (the Oder Lagoon) to reach Szczecin — Poland’s green metropolis at the mouth of the Oder. The reconstructed Ducal Castle in the historic centre, visible from the river, is a striking arrival.
Sailing from Szczecin to Mescherin, then cycling through the cross-border Lower Oder Valley National Park via the Oder-Neisse Cycle Path to Schwedt. Along the way, the former estate of Criewen houses the National Park Centre of Germany’s only floodplain national park.
From Hohensaaten, a ride along the Treidel cycle route on the Finow Canal through beautiful landscapes — forests, clearings, and small hills — to Eberswalde. The city’s Finow Canal lock, built in the 16th century, is Germany’s oldest operational lock and has been a technical monument since 1978.
The ship sails to Oranienburg while you enjoy breakfast, then you disembark for a well-marked cycle route south through the Ruppin Lake area towards Berlin. The Oranienburg Baroque palace — one of the most significant in Brandenburg — is worth a visit before you continue. The tour concludes in Berlin.
Disembarkation by 9 am. Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is around 40 minutes from the city by S-Bahn, with direct flights to UK airports.

Getting to Stralsund
By train: Stralsund is reached by direct train from Berlin Hauptbahnhof in around 2 hours 30 minutes, and from Hamburg in around 2 hours 30 minutes. Both cities have international airports. Flying to Berlin Brandenburg (BER) then taking the train north is the most straightforward option for UK travellers.
By plane: Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has direct flights from multiple UK airports on easyJet, Ryanair, British Airways and Lufthansa. Hamburg Airport (HAM) is another option, also around 2 hours 30 minutes from Stralsund by train.
Getting home from Berlin
This tour ends in Berlin, where Brandenburg Airport (BER) is around 40 minutes from the city by S-Bahn S9. Direct flights return to all major UK airports. The Eurostar via Brussels is also available for the journey home.
