Carinthian Lakes, Austria
Carinthia, often called Austria’s “Sunshine State”, due to it getting more hours of sunshine than anywhere else in the country. Mediterranean flair combines with Austrian hospitality to make this one of Europe’s most inviting cycling destinations.
Your journey begins in Villach, the lively gateway to Carinthia. Over the week, you’ll ride along lakeshores, through valleys dotted with castles, and into towns brimming with history. Highlights include Lake Ossiach with its warm, clear waters, the vibrant city of Klagenfurt, and Lake Klopein, Austria’s warmest bathing lake. Along the way, you’ll pass traditional farmhouses, monasteries, and grand palaces, all framed by alpine landscapes.
With daily routes averaging between 22 and 35 miles, the tour is suitable for cyclists with moderate fitness. The combination of scenic paths, cultural landmarks, and refreshing swimming opportunities makes this holiday both active and relaxing.
A comfortable mix of flat paths and light hills. Great for riders wanting a scenic, flexible trip without too much effort.
Arrive in Villach, a welcoming town at the heart of Carinthia where alpine charm meets Mediterranean ease. Known for its thermal springs, Villach has been a centre of relaxation since Roman times, attracting travellers seeking both rest and rejuvenation. On your first day, you can unwind in the spa facilities, stroll along the Drava River, or explore the old town’s lively cafés and shops. It’s the perfect introduction to Carinthia’s slower pace of life and natural beauty. Overnight in Villach.
Your first ride takes you along the Seebach stream towards the impressive ruins of Landskron Castle. On clear days, the castle can be seen from miles away, standing proudly above the valley. The route circles Lake Ossiach, with its striking backdrop of the Gerlitzen mountains and its pure drinking-quality waters.
In the lakeside town of Ossiach, pause to visit the 11th-century monastery with its beautiful late Baroque church. The shores of Lake Ossiach offer plenty of spots to stop for a swim or lakeside coffee. Continue through the resort villages of Steindorf and Bodensdorf, both buzzing with summer life, before looping back to Villach. This route blends history, lake views, and relaxed cycling.
Departing Villach, you’ll follow the Drava River bike path, a peaceful stretch that leads into Carinthia’s rolling farmland. Soon, you’ll arrive in Velden on Lake Wörthersee, one of Austria’s most glamorous resorts. Its turquoise waters, lakeside villas, and lively streets have made it a magnet for artists, celebrities, and holidaymakers alike.
From Velden, cycle into the Keutschach Valley, a picturesque area filled with small lakes, farmhouses adorned with flowers, and quiet woodlands. Four lakes surround the charming village of Keutschach, all popular for summer bathing. The final stretch follows the Lend Canal along the eastern side of Lake Wörthersee, leading directly into Klagenfurt. The city is full of culture, with Renaissance courtyards, Italianate architecture, and a warm Mediterranean feel.
Begin the day exploring Klagenfurt, often called the “Rose of Lake Wörthersee”. Its historic centre, designed by Italian architects, is filled with charming arcades and elegant courtyards. Be sure to see the Lindwurm Fountain, dedicated to the dragon-like creature that legend says once roamed the area.
From the city, cycle gently along the Glan River, passing through fertile countryside and small villages. The path leads to Lake Völkermarkt before continuing onwards to Lake Klopein. Famous as Austria’s warmest bathing lake, it regularly reaches 27°C in summer. Take the chance to enjoy a swim or simply relax by its shores, surrounded by the peaks of the Karawanks.
Today’s route begins with a ride past the Völkermarkt reservoir, then follows the Glan-Gurk bike path through the Jaun Valley. The town of Völkermarkt, once a ducal seat, offers a glimpse into Carinthia’s medieval past. From here, the ride continues towards Hochosterwitz Castle, one of Austria’s most dramatic fortresses. Rising 492 feet from a limestone cliff, its 14 fortified gates and towers dominate the landscape.
Continue through rolling farmland to reach St. Veit, a town steeped in history. Once the capital of Carinthia, it is filled with reminders of its past glory, including castles, churches, and charming squares. Its cultural significance makes it a highlight of the journey.
The final ride begins with a gentle journey along the Glan River. Soon you’ll see Glanegg Castle ruins rising above the valley, a reminder of Carinthia’s medieval defences. The path leads into Feldkirchen, a lively town that makes a good stop for coffee or pastries.
From here, you’ll return to Lake Ossiach, where you can pause for one last swim or enjoy the lakeside scenery. The ride then continues back to Villach, completing your circuit of Carinthia. In the evening, celebrate the end of your cycling holiday with a stroll through the town or a relaxing soak in the thermal baths.
Your final cycling day takes you to one of the most picturesque lakes in the region. Leaving Warmbad Villach, you head east along the base of the Karawanks mountains. Soon, the turquoise waters of Lake Faak appear, framed by meadows and forested hills.
Dominating the skyline is Mittagskogel, a dramatic peak that reflects beautifully in the water on a clear day. The lake itself is known for its striking colour and its small wooded island, which adds to the charm of the setting. Many visitors take the opportunity to swim here, as the waters are refreshingly cool.
After time by the lake, you cross a gentle ridge and descend towards the Drava River. Following its smooth cycle path, you enjoy a flat and leisurely ride back to Villach. It is a fitting end to the tour, combining mountain views, sparkling waters, and the comfort of a well-marked path.
After breakfast, it is time to depart at your own pace. You might choose to head home or extend your stay to enjoy more of Carinthia’s lakes and mountains. Villach makes a perfect base for day trips, spa visits, or simply relaxing by the water. Whether you leave today or linger a little longer, the memories of cycling between castles, lakes, and mountain valleys will stay with you.
