Overview

Experience the Netherlands in a way that few do, by sailing ship and bicycle along the IJsselmeer, once a sea and now the country’s largest freshwater lake. This unique Sail & Bike holiday lets you explore the rich history, charming towns and impressive nature reserves that surround this iconic body of water.

Starting and ending in Amsterdam, your journey takes you along quiet cycle paths, through centuries-old fishing villages, scenic reclaimed land and two striking national parks. You'll visit UNESCO-listed polders, taste traditional cheese, and see working windmills and shipyards that helped shape Dutch maritime heritage. When not cycling, relax aboard a traditional sailing ship, your floating hotel for the week.

Whether you're a keen cyclist or simply want to explore the Netherlands at a relaxed pace, this trip offers a balanced mix of activity, sightseeing and leisure, with flexible daily cycling distances and the option to stay on board if preferred.

Itinerary

  1. Day01

Arrival in Amsterdam – Embarkation & Sailing to Monnickendam or Volendam

    Elizabeth

Welcome aboard! Your adventure begins in the heart of Amsterdam, where you’ll check in to your sailing ship from 2:00 p.m. The crew will greet you, help you settle into your cabin, and introduce the week ahead. Once all guests are on board, the ship departs (under motor) and cruises out of the bustling capital towards either Monnickendam or Volendam, two picturesque fishing towns on the Markermeer.

Enjoy your first dinner aboard as the cityscape fades into open water. After docking, take an early evening walk through the charming harbourside streets — lined with gabled houses, small shops and sailboats gently bobbing in the marina. Both towns offer a quiet and authentic Dutch welcome.
