Flevoland is the youngest province in the country — reclaimed from the Zuiderzee in the twentieth century — and it wears its engineering proudly. The Flevopolder is the largest artificial island in the world, ringed by dikes you can ride along, with the Houtribdijk carrying you clean across the water to Enkhuizen. In Lelystad, Batavialand tells the story of how the Dutch built the land you’ve just cycled over.
It’s also a wilder ride than you’d expect. The Oostvaardersplassen — one of Europe’s best-known rewilding reserves — is home to konik horses, red deer and white-tailed eagles, all visible from the cycle paths that skirt its marshes. And each April the Noordoostpolder puts on a tulip display to rival anywhere in the country, with quiet farm roads running straight through the fields.
Former islands like Urk and UNESCO-listed Schokland still feel like islands — fishing harbours, sloping quaysides — even though the sea around them is now farmland. It’s the most distinctive region in our Netherlands cycling holidays collection, and the least crowded.
Flevoland shares the mild Dutch maritime climate — warm summers of 18–24°C, gentle springs and autumns — but its landscape changes how the weather feels. With no hills, few trees and long open dikes, wind is the defining feature: glorious behind you, honest work into it, which is why routes here are planned with the forecast in mind.
The riding itself is the flattest and most uninterrupted in the country: long, straight, largely car-free paths across polder, wetland and dike, with barely a junction to slow you down. Pack layers, and enjoy some of the biggest skies you’ll ever cycle under on our Flevoland bike tours.

The whole province was reclaimed from the Zuiderzee in the twentieth century, so the landscape is unlike anywhere else in the country: dead-flat polders below sea level, arrow-straight paths, enormous skies, and former islands like Urk and Schokland marooned in farmland.
The Oostvaardersplassen nature reserve for konik horses, red deer and white-tailed eagles; the Houtribdijk dike ride between Lelystad and Enkhuizen; UNESCO-listed Schokland; the old fishing harbour at Urk; and, in April, the tulip fields of the Noordoostpolder.
Mid-April to early May is peak bloom in the Noordoostpolder, home to some of the largest tulip acreage in the country — and a much quieter place to see the flowers than the busy bulb fields further west.
