Sardinia, Italy

This is a journey along Sardinia’s wild and unspoilt western coast, where turquoise seas meet dramatic cliffs and quiet beaches. Starting from Alghero, the island’s most charming town, you’ll ride past lush pastures, fragrant Mediterranean landscapes, and intriguing caves carved from the rock. Each day offers a new mix of coastal beauty, cultural treasures, and the quiet pleasure of riding at your own pace.

Cycle through the narrow lanes of Alghero, the Spanish-influenced town where Catalan is still spoken. Ride to Capo Caccia, a 168-meter rocky promontory, and explore the Nettuno caves, reached via a cliffside staircase of 656 steps. Along the way, stop at Nuraghe Palmavera and the beaches of Le Bombarde and Lazzaretto. Return to Alghero through vineyards and olive groves producing Sardinia’s renowned wines and oils.
Follow a scenic coastal road, high above the sea, with views over the Gulf of Alghero and Capo Caccia. Continue past the striking pink, red, and grey cliffs of Cape Marargiu, where griffon vultures sometimes circle. Overnight in Bosa, a medieval town known for its embroidery and gold filigree.
Example hotel: Casa Pagiò
After a morning in Bosa or on the beach, ride inland through Flussio and Tinnura, where traditional wicker basket weaving continues. Pass Sagama and refresh at the spring of San Leonardo. End the day on a quiet lane into Santulussurgiu, famous for its handcrafted horse saddles.
Return to the coast, descending to the flat plains of the Sinis wetlands. Spot the pink flamingos and arrive at the striking white quartz beach of Is Arutas. Overnight in a charming countryside hotel.
A short ride down the peninsula to San Giovanni Sinis. Explore the Phoenician ruins of Tharros and the early Christian church of San Giovanni. Continue through Oristano’s medieval centre to Arborea.
Cycle through Costa Verde’s raw beauty, arriving at Piscinas, with sand dunes over 50 meters high, Europe’s tallest.
Ride past the abandoned mines of Ingortosu and Planusartu, then descend to Portixeddu’s golden beach and gaze up at Pan di Zucchero cliff. Admire the old ore washery at Nebida, perched over the sea.
Example hotel: B Locanda S’anninnia
Descend to Fontanamare, ride to Portoscuso, and take the ferry to Carloforte, a village where Red Tuna fishing continues. Continue to Sant’Antioco and overnight in Calasetta.
Cycle through the green meadows of Sant’Antioco, visiting the Pisan sanctuary in Tratalias. Ride along Lake Monte Pranu, enjoying the quiet plains of Sulcis.
The tour’s grand finale takes you along Costa del Sud, with white sandy beaches, dramatic cliffs, and historical landmarks like Cape Malfatano’s 16th-century tower and Cape Spartivento. Stop at Chia’s beaches and the ancient Phoenician settlement of Nora.
