Overview

The professionals do it in a single day. You get a week. This self-guided cycling holiday from Turin to Sanremo is the civilised version of the great classic — and all the better for it. Instead of racing, you soak up the baroque grandeur of royal Turin, the rich agricultural landscapes of Piedmont, the Cistercian abbey of Staffarda, and the charming hilltop towns of the Langhe and Liguria.

The route winds south from Turin through Pinerolo and Saluzzo, past orchards, vineyards and the imposing Monte Viso, before climbing into the wine-producing hills around Mondovi and crossing the Apennines into Liguria. The crossing itself — over the Colle Scravaion pass — is the high point in every sense, rewarded with your first glimpse of the Ligurian Sea. From Albenga, a bus transfer to Imperia puts you on one of Italy’s finest coastal cycle paths, from which Sanremo is just a glorious ride along the Riviera of Flowers.

Daily stages range from 14 to 37 miles. Most of the route uses quiet side roads, with only short sections on busier roads near towns. The terrain is generally gentle with a few notable exceptions — day five has the greatest climbing. Accommodation is in 3-star and 4-star hotels throughout.

Turin is the elegant centre of Piedmont at the foot of the Alps. Explore the historic city with its baroque palaces, wide portico-lined streets, the Mole Antonelliana, and the excellent Egyptian Museum. The city is also renowned for its café culture — the bicerin, a layered drink of espresso, drinking chocolate and cream, was invented here and should not be missed.
